Birth17 Sep 1896 or 17 Sep 1898 Florence Virginia Dunn was born on 17 Sep 1896 or 17 Sep 1898 in Virginia.1,4,5,6,7
Florence Virginia was named for her aunt Florence Virginia Dunn (1830-1914). As an adult the younger woman was known as Virginia. One record states that her full name was Florence Virginia Reid Dunn.1
It is not clear if Virginia was born in 1896 or 1898. The record created closest to her birth (1900 census) lists her as age 3, born in Sept. 1896. A record created by a relative, probably in the early 1900s, lists 17 Sept. 1896 as her date of birth. However, the same record lists Virginia's sister Lenora with a birth date of 16 Sept. 1896 with no mention that they were twins. Lenora's date of birth has also been reported by other family members as 1897 (without a specific date). Since Lenora died young and no confirming record is available it is impossible to clarify either date for her. Virginia reported her age on the 1920 census as 23 (enumerated in Jan. 1920 = b. abt 1896). However on 2 documents created later in her life (notes from a DAR application and instructions to her executor regarding her burial) she represented her date of birth as Sept. 17, 1898. Virginia's apparent "loss" of 2 years from her birthdate may have coincided with her marriage to Walter Martin who was born in late 1901 and was 35 at the time of their marriage (Virginia was most likely 40).
Cens-19007 Jun 1900  The 1900 census asked each adult woman how many children she had given birth to and how many were living. Florence Virginia's mother replied that she had given birth to 12 children, but only six were living. At age 3 "Florence" was recorded as the youngest surviving child. Four older siblings, ranging in age from 22 year old Minter to 7 year old Sallie were also recorded. In 1900 the family lived in the Glade Spring District of Washington County, Virginia.4
Cens-191021 Apr 1910  The 1910 census recorded "Florence V." as age 15. She and 2 older sisters were enumerated with their widowed mother.8
Migration  Following her mother's death in May 1910 Virginia may have accompanied her older sister Sallie when she moved to Ohio. The sisters' older brother Walter was already living in the city of Portsmouth where he worked for the railroad.
Marriage She married first Raymond Sheets.9
The location of the marriage is not known but most likely it occured in Ohio, Raymond's place of birth.
Cens-19203 Jan 1920  Following their marriage the couple lived with Raymond's parents. There they were recorded in 1920. Both Raymond and Virginia were 23. Raymond stated that he owned (as did his father) an otto [sic] supply shop.10
LineageSoc1925  In 1925, while living in Portsmouth, Virginia was accepted for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution through the line of Edward Jackson.11,12
Marriage11 Sep 1937 She married second Walter Eugene Martin on 11 Sep 1937 in Greenup, Kentucky.13
Marriage19 Jan 1974 She married third William Beatie, son of Alonzo Claibourne Beatie and Elnora Walton, on 19 Jan 1974 in Marion, Virginia.14
Death27 Jun 1976 Florence died on 27 Jun 1976.15
Burial She was buried at Westwood Memorial Gardens in Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia.15

He kept a notebook in which he recorded the names and dates of Mary's children. Children born after Stephen's 1892 death were entered by another family member, possibly some years after their birth as all of the dates to not appear accurate.

  12. [S16] A good deal of the data in Virginia's DAR application duplicates information found in the Stephen Alonzo Jackson article in Virginia and Virginians. That information is believed to have originated with the same person who wrote the "Jackson Ledger". Present day Jackson researchers believe some of the data on the early generations of this family are in error. See: http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com/pages/…
