Sally Roe

b. 9 November 1799, d. 16 April 1887
FatherJohn Roe1
Birth9 Nov 1799 Sally Roe was born on 9 Nov 1799.2
Marriage4 Jan 1816 She married James McKee, son of Andrew McKee and Elizabeth (?), on 4 Jan 1816 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Cens-18507 Sep 1850  Almost 35 years after their marriage, James and Sarah were enumerated on the first federal census to record all members of a household by name. James was stated to be 58 years old. He was a farmer and owned land worth $5,000. Sarah was 45. Six younger McKee individuals were listed with them, presumably Sarah and James' children. In addition, 19 year old Margaret Gum and 22 year old Isaac Larimer were recorded as part of the household.4
WidowedJul 1855  James died of consumption in July 1855. His will left Sally her dower third of his land with the stipulation it was to include the home in which they lived.5
Cens-18606 Aug 1860  Five years later "Sarah" was enumerated as the head of a household that also included her 4 youngest children: Margaret (25), Sarah (21), Joanna (19) and James (18). Sarah was stated to own land worth $2,000.6
Land-Dower27 May 1862  The deed resulted from an order issued by the Washington County court dated 27 May 1862 directing Sampson Patterson, James Crow and Isaac McQuown to assign dower to Mrs. Sarah McKee, widow of James McKee dec'd in the land [blank] his son Andrew McKee now deceased.7
Sally's son Andrew died in the early 1860s. Her son John died in a Confederate Hospital in 1863. Sally's daughter Sarah married James O. Denton in 1863 but appears to have been widowed shortly thereafter. James was probably the same James O. Denton who fought with Co. K. of the 37th Virginia Infantry, was captured at Spottsylvania, Virginia on May 12th, 1864 and who died of pneumonia at Ft. Delaware prison on Feb. 21, 1865.8
Cens-187028 Sep 1870  Sally's 1870 household included a blend of 3 generations. Besides Sarah (71), it included Margaret McKee, 30 [Sally's daughter], Sarah Denton, 29 [Sally's widowed daughter], Thomas Dungan, 30 [Sally's son-in-law], J.M. Dungan, 28 [Sally's daughter Joanna] with two Dungan children. Also present were A.B. McKee, 17 [probably Sally's grandson Andrew, s/o Andrew J. McKee], S.E. McKee, 11 [probably Sally's granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth, d/o Andrew J. McKee] and S. Tomlinson, 23.9 [probably Samuel, son of Jabeze Tomlinson and Eliza Robinson]
Death16 Apr 1887 According to her headstone Sally died on 16 Apr 1887. However, the Washington County death register reports that she died on the 25th at Glade Spring, Virginia.2,10,1
