Marriage15 Sep 1829 She married Arthur Stewart, son of William Stewart and Mary Orr, on 15 Sep 1829 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4 
Legatee20 May 1844 Mary's father, William Buchanan, wrote his will on May 20th, 1844. He left the bulk of his estate to his son Russell, but instructed him to pay William's other children, including Mary ("Polly, wife of Arthur Stewart"), $50.00 each.1 
Cens-185018 Sep 1850 Mary and Arthur farmed land in Washington County where they raised a family of at least 8 children. The 1850 census enumeration recorded them with 7 of those children: Margaret (18), William (12), Mary A. (10), Joseph (8), Sarah (6), Robert (5) and Josephine (1).5 
1859 The years that followed were not kind to the family. Arthur died of consumption in September 1856. A few months later, on January 9th, 1857 Mary's son Robert died of a fever at age 11. Two weeks later her daughter Margaret died of the same thing at age 25. That April daughter Mary Ann married, only to lose her husband to consumption in April of 1859. In late June of 1859 flux claimed the life of Mary's 22 year old son, William. Exactly a month later Mary's sister died of the same thing. 
Cens-18609 Oct 1860 The 1860 census enumerated Mary as the head of her household and stated that she owned land valued at $2,000. Three of her children were still single and at home: Sarah (17), Josephine (8) [not correct age] and Arthur (7). In addition, daughter Mary and her second husband William Trammel were living in the home. They had married two weeks earlier.6 
Deathafter 1860 Mary died after 1860.
