b. 14 April 1772, d. 8 May 1848
Birth | 14 Apr 1772 | Robert Logan was born on 14 Apr 1772.2 |
Marriage | 18 Aug 1803 | He married Rebecca Byars on 18 Aug 1803 in Washington County, Virginia.3 |
Tax | 1815 | In 1815 Robert owned a 100 acre farm in the Saltworks Valley joining Anthony Fitchpatrick and Elisha McNew (deceased). The main house had a log and brick chimney and there was also a log barn, 2 log cabins and a grist mill. Robert's tax assessment for the year was $1,575 which also included 2 slaves. Robert also held an interest in a "small improvement in Saltworks Valee". The other owner was Shaw Logan [presumably his brother Wm S.]. The land was described as 188 acres joining Robert and James Logan.4 |
Legatee | 27 Dec 1818 | When Robert's father wrote his will in 1818, he left Robert $100 to be paid in trade or cash 12 years after James's death.5 |
Widowed | 19 Apr 1819 | Rebecca died on 19 Apr 1819. |
Cens-1820 | 1820 | The following summer Robert was enumerated on the 1820 census. He would have been the male indicated by a slash mark in the "male over 45 column". His household also included 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 2 females under 10 and 1 female 10-15.6 |
| | Since Robert's will identified 7 sons (all of whom appear to have lived to adulthood) it would appear one of them was not living at home in 1820. His will also identified 2 daughters but 3 young females were in his household in 1820 suggesting perhaps he and Rebecca had another daughter who died young. |
Marriage | 9 Aug 1827 | He married second Elizabeth Eakin, daughter of Alexander Eakin, on 9 Aug 1827 in Washington County. Robert was 55; Elizabeth was probably just shy of 40.7 |
Will | Aug 1847 | Robert's will, written in August 1847 and recorded in June 1848, left a life interest in specific lands to his wife Elizabeth. He also refered to a slave Mary which he obtained by his marriage to his present wife, making it clear Elizabeth was not his first wife. One third of the value of this slave and her offspring was to go to Elizabeth and on her death that share was to pass to Margaret Logan (the wife of Joseph Logan) and Mary Jane Reeves (the wife of George W. Reeves) [The relationship of these two women to Robert, if any, was not stated although Margaret may have been the wife of Robert's son Joseph]. Robert specifically named the following heirs between whom he divided his land, personal property and slaves: son William B. Logan, children of deceased son James, son Robert Logan, dau Elizabeth McCall, dau Rebecca Logan, son Rufus Logan, son Joseph Logan (and Joseph's son William), and son Caleb Logan (and Caleb's sons Robert, John and Samuel). He also referenced a deceased son, John.8 |
Death | 8 May 1848 | Robert died on 8 May 1848 at age 76.2 |
Burial | | He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2 |
Will-Recd | 26 Jun 1848 | When the will was presented to court in June 1848, Isaac Horne, who Robert had appointed as his executor, declined to execute. Elizabeth relinquished her right to administer the will and the court then appointed William Heskell and Mathew Buchanan as administrators. They posted bond in the amount of $7,000.8 |
