Birth21 Apr 1798 Arthur Orr was born on 21 Apr 1798 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Legatee26 May 1814  Arthur was left $15.00 by his grandfather, Arthur Orr, when he wrote his will in 1814.2
Marriage21 Oct 1823 He married Jane Hope, daughter of James Hope and Margaret Dryden, on 21 Oct 1823 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Cens-185020 Aug 1850  Twenty-seven years after their marriage Arthur and Jane were recorded on the first federal census to list all members of a household by name. Arthur was enumerated as a 50 year old farmer who owned land valued at $4,000. Jane was 40. The household also included Nathan (25), Emily (23), James (19), Frances (14) and Arthur (10).5
The couple's son Nathaniel left home not long after this census was recorded. The details of his journey west are not known to this author, but in the fall of 1852 he landed at the harbor in Steilacoom, Washington. Nathaniel became an active member of the growing community, marrying and raising a large family. He was a talented carpenter and wagon builder. Nathaniel's home, built in 1857, is on the Washington Register of Historic Places and is now a museum.6,7
It appears that Arthur and Jane's son James either accompanied his brother Nathaniel to Washington or followed shortly thereafter as both men were enumerated in Pierce Co. (Steilacoom Post Office) in 1860.8,9
WidowedApr 1853  Jane died in April 1853.
Cens-186017 Jul 1860  Arthur's 1860 household included himself (land valued at $7,000; personal property worth $1,500), his son Arthur 20, and his two daughters, Elizabeth (28) and Mary (21).10
DeathMar 1866 Arthur died in Mar 1866 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 67.11
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.12
Will-Recd28 Mar 1866  Arthur's will, written in January 1866, was recorded on March 28th. He left his estate to his daughters Emily [Emily Elizabeth] and Mary Frances, with the exception of $1,000 which he charged Emily to use at the rate of $60 annually to provide for Arthur's son Arthur.13
Since the younger man was 25 or 26 when Arthur wrote his will, one might speculate that he was in someway incapacitated.
Arthur and Jane may have also had an infant daughter born in late 1831 who died at 1 year of age in Jan. 1833.14
