BirthCircacirca 1773 Margaret Dryden was born in Virginia circa 1773.3
Marriage21 Feb 1793 She married first James Hope on 21 Feb 1793 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Cens-18101810  The 1810 census was enumerated as of the first Monday in August. As of that date James's household included the following: 2 males under 10 [probably John and James W.], 1 male 10-15 [probably Nathaniel], 1 male 16-26 [probably Adam], 3 females under 10 [probably Mary, Jane and Phoebe], 1 female 10-15 [probably Nancy] and 1 female 26-45 [no doubt Margaret]. The household included 7 slaves.4
Widowed  James died in the late fall of 1811. Four or five of Margaret's children were still under the age of 10. James's will left Margaret the use of his land and slaves but the wording was somewhat ambiguous and in Dec. 1811 she renounced the will.5,6
Court Record14 Jun 1813 On 14 Jun 1813 the court directed that Margaret's dower be assigned as such: a slave named Lewis and a slave named Peter. She also was assigned a tract of land.7
Court Record  Later settlement records showed that the estate paid Margaret for various expenses, including $60 for boarding and schooling the children for the years 1813 and 1814.8
Marriage21 Aug 1817 She married second Isaac McQuown on 21 Aug 1817 in Washington County, Virginia.9
Isaac was himself a widower in his mid 40s with a large family. Margaret and Isaac had one son together, whom they named Isaac Alexander.
WidowedMay 1850  Margaret was widowed for a second time in May, 1850.
Cens-18509 Sep 1850  A few months later, at the age of 77, Margaret was recorded on the 1850 census living with Isaac and his family.3
Death8 May 1854 Margaret died of old age on 8 May 1854 in Washington County.2
Probate Recd  Margaret's will was recorded in Washington County court on 22 May 1854. Later settlement records included charges for burial clothes ($1.17), a coffin ($8.00) and tombstones ($15.00). They also provided the following married names and spouses for Margaret's daughters: Nancy Berry, Polly Orr (wife of Archibald - both deceased by 1860), Phoebe Reid (wife of Benjamin), Jane Orr (wife of Arthur). James Hope also received a small distributive share.10,11,12

Research Comment:

Margaret's will did not mention 3 individuals named in the will of her first husband James Hope: Adam, Nathaniel and John Hope. The census count for James Hope's 1810 household suggests all 8 of his children were born after his marriage to Margaret. Did Margaret not name them because they had left the area? Were they deceased?
