Cens-188026 Jun 1880  Bertha was enumerated on the 1880 federal census at age 4 living in her parent's home in the Glade Spring District of Washington County, Virginia.2 
Cens-190023 Jun 1900 But by 1900 she was living at ["Cave Springs",] the home of her cousin [once removed], Elizabeth Byars Hall.5 
Legatee30 Jun 1906  Bertha cared for Elizabeth after the death of Elizabeth's son William. In her will Elizabeth left Bertha $500 as well as a share in her household belongings. She also directed her executors to pay Bertha whatever they deemed proper. Elizabeth wrote, "She has been very kind to me in my sorrow and loneliness."6 
Legatee20 Mar 1907 Bertha may have also cared for her younger sister Janie. In early 1907 at the age of 25, Janie wrote a will instructing that her doctor's bills be paid and the remainder of her estate go to her sister Bertha, "with no condition whatsoever."7 
Cens-19206 Jan 1920  The 1920 census, recorded in January of that year, enumerated Bertha in the household of 69 year old Mary E. Clark who lived in the Saltville District of Washington County. Bertha's occupation was entered as "nurse."8 
Marriage26 Aug 1920 She married Charles Gobble on 26 Aug 1920 in Washington County.9 
26 Aug 1920 She was 44 and he was 58. 
Death15 Apr 1942 Bertha died on 15 Apr 1942 at age 66.3 
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3,10
