Migration  James grew up in Washington County, Virginia, but as a young man migrated to Pulaski County, Kentucky. 
Military1812  On Aug. 23, 1813 he enlisted as a private in Capt. Samuel Tate's Company of the Kentucky Militia. He was discharged Dec. 22nd.7 
Marr Bond19 Oct 1813 He and Elizabeth Stephenson were issued a marriage bond on Oct. 19th, 1813 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. They married 19 Oct 1813.8,7 
Land-Gift27 Oct 1814  A year later James' father, William Beattie, gifted him 404 acres on Pitman Creek in Pulaski County, adjoining a tract William gifted to James' brother John.9  
Land-Gift6 Nov 1822  In 1822 the older man deeded John and James jointly another 116 acres on Pitman Creek.10 
Migrationbefore 1836 James and Elizabeth migrated to Saline County, Missouri, in the late 1830s.11 
Cens-18401840  They appear to have been enumerated in Salt Pond township in Saline County in 1840.12 
Land-Sell1842  James and Elizabeth were definitely established in Saline County by 1842 when they sold several lots back in Pulaski County and were stated to be "of Saline Co., Missouri."13 
Legatee14 Oct 1834  James was left $200 from the sale of land in Kentucky when his father wrote his will in 1834. However, the older man lived another 26 years.4 
Cens-Sum  James and Elizabeth raised 9 children, all of whom were born before the family left Kentucky. In 1860, just prior to the start of the Civil War, James owned land in Missouri valued at $6,200 and personal property worth $2,000. In 1870 Benjamin Poe, who had married James and Elizabeth's youngest daughter Paulina in 1867, was enumerated as the head of the family. James was 81; Elizabeth was not present.6,14,15 
Death28 Feb 1874 James died on 28 Feb 1874.16

It was not recorded in court until 28 May 1860. The will was originally witnessed by Samuel Dunn, James Porterfield and Beattie Ryburn. However, by the time the will was recorded only Samuel Dunn was living. James C. Porterfield and Arthur D. Hutton testified that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of these two witnesses. Madison Beattie took the oath of executor with a bond of $2,000.
