Birth20 Sep 1864 Sarah E. M. M. Ryburn was born on 20 Sep 1864 near Lodi in Washington County, Virginia.4,5
Childhood Sarah grew up on the Ryburn farm near Lodi. She was the youngest of 8 children and was no doubt named for an older sister who died the year before Sarah was born.6,3
Religion11 Oct 1885 At the age of 21 she joined the nearby Rock Spring Presbyterian Church.1
Devisee30 Jun 1886 Sarah's father, Col. William Ryburn, wrote his will three years before Sarah's marriage. Sarah was to receive a share of the household possessions, $25 from a certificate of deposit and a share in the proceeds from the sale of the "Knob" land. In addition Sarah was bequeathed $100, half the carpeting in the house, a horse, a heifer and a sewing machine. William also left her the land known as "the Beatty farm", less about 61 acres which was set aside for Sarah's nephew, William Carmack. And she was to receive 9 1/4 acres of the home tract, the bulk of which was left to her brother Samuel. In addition Sarah received the farm known as the Larimore land. These gifts of land were to be held by Sarah and should she marry were not to be subject to her husband's control or management, nor could they be used to pay a husband's debts.

By the time William added a codicil to his will in 1898 Sarah had married. William noted that on that day he was conveying 47 acres of the home farm to Sarah and her husband, William Snodgrass. William also appointed William Snodgrass as one of his executors, in place of Sarah's brother, Samuel, who had died.
Marriage4 Aug 1889 She married William James Snodgrass, son of William Snodgrass and Mary Elizabeth Edmondson, on 4 Aug 1889 in Washington County, Virginia.7
Cens-19004 Jun 1900 Eleven years later William and Sarah were enumerated on the 1900 federal census, along with 4 children: Henry, age 9, Elizabeth, age 7, Mary, age 3 and Matildy, 9 months old. A fifth child died at birth in 1895. The couple were probably living on the land deeded to them by Sarah's father, as Sarah's brother John, as well as her widowed sister-in-law, Phebe Ryburn were enumerated in nearby households. Also, William and Sarah were sharing their home with Sarah's aunt Catherine Ryburn.8
Cens-191012 Apr 1910 Later census records recorded the changes in the extended family: Catherine died in 1908 and was buried with a headstone that said "Aunt Catherine"; William and Sarah added another daughter to their family, and Sarah's brother John married their widowed sister-in-law Phebe.9,10
Death18 Feb 1941 Sarah died on 18 Feb 1941 near Lodi at age 76.4,5
Burial She was buried in Rock Spring Cemetery, Washington County, Virginia. Sarah and her husband are buried near the Ryburn family section.4
