Devisee30 Jun 1886 Samuel's father wrote his will in the summer of 1886, two years before Samuel's marriage. In it he left Samuel a share of the household property, a share of a certificate of deposit and a share of the proceeds from the sale of the "Knob land". He also was to receive a new wheat drill and mowing machine and a two year old spotted heifer. Samuel was also to inherit the "home farm" on which his father was living, with the exception of about 9 acres which was left to Samuel's sister Sarah. And Samuel was to receive two other tracts of land known as the Eakin farm and the Graham farm.

However, Samuel died before his father and so in December, 1898 William added a codicil to his will leavng the same bequests to Samuel's three sons: Frank McCutchan Ryburn, William Thomas Ryburn and John Patrick Ryburn. The land was subject to the dower rights of the boys' mother, Phebe Ryburn, so long as she remained single.2
