Birth5 Mar 1854 John David George Ryburn was born on 5 Mar 1854 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Devisee30 Jun 1886 John's father, Col. William Ryburn, wrote his will in 1886 leaving John a share of his personal estate, his old grass mowing machine, a corn sheller, a gun and cash arising from the sale of the "Knob land". John also received a tract of land known as the Fulcher land. Following the death of John's brother Samuel, Col. William added a codicil to his will. In addition to the prior bequests, John now received his father's silver watch. William had originally left the farm on which he resided to Samuel, but upon his death it was left to Samuel's 3 sons, subject to their mother's dower. John was allowed a room in the house (which he was not to rent) and the use of the front door and stairway to the room as long as he remained unmarried. William's codicil also stated that he had as of that day deeded 47 acres of the home farm to his daughter Sarah and her husband William Snodgrass.2
Cens-19001900 John's father died just before the 1900 census was recorded. It is not entirely clear if John continued to live in the family home, but he appears to have continued to farm his father's land as he was enumerated adjacent to Samuel's widow Phoebe (with her 3 sons), and his sister Sarah Snodgrass and her husband William.5
The Snodgrasses were also providing a home for Catherine Ryburn, John and Sarah's aunt.
Marriage8 Apr 1905 He married Phebe Emily Larimer, widow of his brother Samuel, on 8 Apr 1905 in Washington County, Virginia.6
12 Apr 1905 He was 51 and she was 37.
Cens-191012 Apr 1910  Although Phoebe would have technically lost any rights to the land when she remarried, the farm actually belonged to her sons and it appears that John, Phoebe and the 3 boys continued to live on the Ryburn lands. They were enumerated on the 1910 census with William and Sarah Snodgrass again as the adjacent household.7
Cens-19205 Jan 1920  By 1920 only Phoebe's son William was still at home with she and John.8
Religion12 Oct 1919 John joined the Rock Spring Presbyterian Church in Meadowview on 12 Oct 1919.1
13 Oct 1919  He was buried in the church cemetery 7 years later.
Will3 Mar 1923 John's will, dated March 3, 1923, left his wife Phoebe all his real estate and one half of his personal property. Following her death the land was to pass to William T. Ryburn. John referred to William as his son, although William was actually his nephew and stepson. William also received the other half of John's personal property and was named as executor.9
Death6 Feb 1927 John died on 6 Feb 1927 at age 72.4
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
