Birth23 Aug 1810 Eliza Kennedy Edmiston was born on 23 Aug 1810.4
Name Other  An 1824 guardianship record recorded her given name as Elizabeth, but all other available records use Eliza. Similarily, her surname was generally spelled Edmiston at the time of her birth but by the year of her marriage was spelled Edmondson.
Devisee19 Nov 1822  Eliza's father died in 1822, leaving her, at the age of twelve, a tract of land known by the name of the Johnston tract, as well as a portion of the home farm. She was to share these with her sister Jane. They also jointly received their father's land in the state of Kentucky, as well as several Negroes. In addition each girl received beds, furniture and their father's cash, notes, and all remaining property.1
Guardian21 Sep 1824 Robert Edmison, Elizabeth's older brother, was named her guardian on 21 Sep 1824 following the death of their father in Oct. 1822.3
Marriage13 Aug 1829 She married John M. Campbell, son of (?) Campbell, on 13 Aug 1829.5
Land-Sell28 Jul 1834  A few years later, on July 28th, 1834, John and Eliza sold their interest in the land Eliza inherited to her sister Jane Dunn and Jane's husband Samuel for $610.6
Cens-18401840  John and Eliza settled on land in neighboring Smyth County, Virginia, where the 1840 census recorded John as the head of a household that included 1 male aged 10-14, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29 and 7 slaves.7
Cens-185025 Jul 1850  Ten years later, when the names of all household members were recorded for the first time, John's household included, besides himself (age 49, owns real estate worth $7,000): Eliza K. (39), Charles E. (20), Margaret (12) and Sarah (1).8
Cens-18606 Jun 1860  Later the family moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee. They continued to farm, likely with the assistance of a number of slaves (John owned personal property worth $25,000 in 1860). Son Charles was noted to be a medical student. The household also included Margaret B. (20), Sallie B. (12) and Emily (also 12). Emily was not recorded with the family in 1850.9
DeathAug 1872 Eliza died in Aug 1872 in Tennessee.4

Research Comment:

According to David Trimble's Buchanan and Gillespie Elizabeth and John had the following children: Charles E. (marr Susan Johnson), Sarah Margaret (d. Dec. 18, 1867) and John Campbell. I have not been able to relate this to the couple's 1850 and 1860 census entries; neither can I explain the presence of 12 year old Emily on the 1860 census. Similarily, the birth and death dates for Eliza are from secondary sources. If you can shed additional light on this family please contact me.4
