FatherZachariah Shugart Jr.1,2 b. 29 Apr 1773, d. 20 Nov 1835
MotherElizabeth Offult1 d. 1819
Birth23 Sep 1814 Mary Ann K. Shugart was born on 23 Sep 1814.3
MarriageOct 1844 She married David Beattie Clark, son of Capt. John B. Clark and Mary Beattie, in Oct 1844.4,5
Children1845  Eric Shugart's webpage lists children John, Mary Ann, Willie, Henry and Josephine Beatty Clark. The 1860 and 1870 census records show children John, Mary and Josephine living with Mary Ann and David, but I have not been able to document the other children.6,1,7
Land-Sell13 Feb 1847 On on 13 Feb 1847 Mary and David sold 54 acres of land to James Clark for $600. It represented David and Mary Ann's share of the 400 acre tract her father Zachariah Shugart purchased from Phillip Griever/Greever in 1820. The acreage sat on the south end of the Shugart/Griever tract and was adjacent to James Clark.
Land-Buy27 Aug 1847  The following February David B. Clark and Eliza Shugart purchased 136 acres from George and Susannah Cole for $1,700, "in proportion to respective parts by them paid."
This appears to represent David (and Mary Ann) jointly purchasing land with Mary Ann's sister Eliza.
Cens-18503 Aug 1850  And in fact when David and Mary Ann's household was enumerated in August 1850 it included 32 year old Eliza Shugart as well as 2 year old John Clark [David and Mary Ann's son]. David was noted as owning land valued at $2,000. Eliza was not listed as owning land at all.8
Cens-18601860  On the eve of the Civil War David and Mary Ann's household was again enumerated. They now owned land valued at $4,600 as well as personal property of an almost equal amount. Three children were enumerated: John, Mary, and Josephine, as well as Eliza Lane (53).7 [Mary Ann's sister Eliza had married Benjamin Lane in 1853]
Cens-1860- Slave26 Jul 1860  David's personal property reflected his ownership of 4 slaves.9
Cens-18708 Oct 1870  The changes brought on by the end of the war were reflected on the 1870 census. David's land lost a quarter of its value and his personal property decreased to $750. The census also recorded the fact that David could not read or write.10
Cens-188021 Jun 1880  The 1880 census clarified that David (63) and Mary Ann (64) lived in the Saltville district of Washington County. Their two daughters Mary and Josephine, as well as Elizabeth Layne (74) were also again enumerated as part of the household.11
Death26 Jun 1893 Mary died on 26 Jun 1893 at age 78.3
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3

Research Comment:

High On A Windy Hill, p. 177, contains an entry for a Margaret, wife of David B. Clark. Her dates are recorded as 25 Sep 1814-26 Jun 1895, but the data is credited to an older Redmond Cole record (not information gathered when the book compilers "read" the cemetery themselves). I believe this is actually the same record as that for Mary Ann which is listed one line up on the same page. The dates for the two entries are identical with the exception of 2 instances where the Cole record reports a "five" and Windy Hill reports a "three". A reading of the stones organized in the 1950s by John Blakemore reported only one stone: Mary Ann K. Clark, wife of D.B. Clark, born 23 Sept. 1814, d. 26 June, 1893.12,13
