Birth3 Jul 1863 William E. Jones Hutton was born on 3 Jul 1863 in Glade Spring, Washington County, Virginia.3,4,5,6
Name Other In 1930 historian Judge Redmond Cole interviewed William at Glade Spring, Virginia. Judge Cole's typed notes recorded William's middle name as Edmondson. However William used the name Edward, or Edward J., his entire life, both in business and within his own family. The 1870 census listed him as 7 year old "Edward" and a manuscript left by his brother referred to him as William Edward. It is possible Cole's notes from that interview were typed in error as all known references by family members, past or present, use Edward.1,7,8
Legatee31 Aug 1867  Edward's Aunt Amanda Hutton, writing her will in late 1867, left him a quilt, sheets, a tablecloth and her silver tea spoons. Edward was four years old at the time.9
Legatee30 Jun 1906  Years later his cousin, Elizabeth Hall, willed him a china tea set. She left money to two of Edward's brothers and a third was her executor.10
Marriage21 Mar 1888 He married Margaret Eliza Porterfield, daughter of Lillburn Breckenridge Porterfield and Rachel Craig Buchanan, on 21 Mar 1888 in Washington County, Virginia.11
Devisee1892 Edward's father died in 1892 leaving him 60 acres of land on the east side of the "home farm". The will stipulated that Edward could place a road on the land for the purpose of removing lumber but that the road was to remain gated at all other times.12
Residence  This was the land Edward was farming in 1920 when his residence was recorded on that years census as "Tattle Branch Rd."13 [now Indian Run Road]
Children  Here he and Margaret raised six sons and one daughter, most of whom stayed on the farm until well into adulthood. Their son Thomas became a lawyer and followed in the footsteps of his uncle, Francis Beattie Hutton. Sons James and Henry became high school teachers.14
Death21 Sep 1944 William died on 21 Sep 1944 in Glade Spring, Washington County, Virginia, at age 81.6,15
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.6

Research Comment:

The Washington Co. Birth Register notes the birth of a child, William Hutton, born on March 24th 1892 to E.J. and M.E. Hutton. This appears to be a twin to Lillian Rachel, however it seems odd that there is no entry for Lillian in the same register. Also, Margaret's 1900 and 1910 census entries state that all of her children were living. Hence, for the moment, I have not added William as an additional child.16
