FatherJoseph Buchanan2,3 b. say 1775, d. bef 19 Mar 1822
MotherElizabeth Barrick2 b. abt 1784
BirthCircacirca 1812 David Buchanan was born in Virginia circa 1812.4
Marriage He married Nancy E. Robinson probably around 1834.5
Cens-185031 Aug 1850  In 1850 David and Nancy resided in Smyth County, Virginia, where David owned land valued at $1,000. The household also included Eliza Ann (14), John (12), Joseph (10), David D. (7), Mary L. (5), Solomon (3), Joanna Pickle (13) and Jacob Robinson (33).4
Widowed  Nancy apparently died between 1855 and 1857. She and David were the parents of at least 8 children.
Marriage3 Sep 1857 David married second Catherine Robinson, daughter of Moore Robinson and Catherine (?), on 3 Sep 1857 in Smyth County, Virginia.6
David was 44 and Catherine was 23.
Cens-18609 Jul 1860  David and Catherine's 1860 Smyth Co. household included 4 children who were present in David and Nancy's 1850 household: John (22), Joseph (20), David D. (16) and Mary L. (14). The youngest child in the 1850 household, Solomon, was not present in 1860 [; the oldest child in the 1850 household, Eliza, married David Brooks in 1856].

Born after 1850, and presumably also David's children with Nancy, were Nancy E. (8) and Sarah C. (5). Two children appear to have been born to David and Catherine: Martha E. (1) and Philip (8/12).7
Widowed  David was apparently widowed a second time in the months or year following the 1860 census entry.
Marriage14 Nov 1861 He married third Rachel Fox on 14 Nov 1861 in Smyth County, Virginia.8
David was 48 and Rachel was 21.
Cens-187020 Aug 1870  David and Rachel's 1870 household was a blend of children from his 3 marriages. His two youngest children with first wife Nancy, Nancy E. (18) and Sarah C. (16) were still at home; Sarah could not read or write. Daughter Martha (11) from his marriage to Catherine was present; she could not write. Son Philip was not present and is not otherwise accounted for.

David and Rachel appear to have added 4 children of their own: William A. (8), Alsie M. (6), Laura B. (3) and Roland, 8 [Reuben, 8 months]. David's farm was valued at $340 and he owned $300 in personal property.9
Cens-18801 Jun 1880  By June 1880 the family had moved to neighboring Washington County where David worked as a laborer. He was 68; Rachel was 39. The couple had added 3 more children to the family: Henry, James and Emiline.10
One more son, Charles, was born in May 1882. At the turn of the century Rachel was enumerated in the Glade Spring district of Washington County with the couple's two youngest sons. James (24) was a section hand for a railroad; Charles (18) worked as a farm laborer. Rachel's entry recorded that she was the mother of 8 children with 7 living. She was listed as a widow.

David was the father of a very large family. Although the early census records did not identify relationships, nothing suggests the children in his pre-1880 households were not his. Given that assumption, he was the father of at least 18 children by 3 wives.11
