BirthJan 1870 Fannie L. Horne was born in Jan 1870, possibly in Wythe County, Virginia.3,4,5
Childhood  Although Fannie's marriage record states she was born in Wythe County, Fannie's parents were enumerated in Washington County, Virginia on both the 1860 and 1870 census records. By 1870 they clearly lived with Fannie's paternal grandparents Isaac Horne and Eliza [Talbert] Horne. Fannie's father died in 1873; her Horne grandparents died a few years later, leaving Fannie and her siblings as their only heirs.6,3
Court Record4 May 1882  In 1882, the year following the marriage of Fannie's older sister Mary, proceedings were undertaken to divide the land among the siblings. Because several of the siblings were underage, the division was conducted through Chancery Court. Fannie received 53 acres on which sat the tanyard and other buildings. Her brother William received the family home on the "public road".7
The home William inherited was an old stage coach inn that had been in the family since Isaac Horne acquired the land and home from his wife's siblings in the 1830s (Isaac Horne married Eliza Talbert in 1827). Despite the 1882 decree partitioning Isaac's property among his grandchildren, the deed was not recorded until 1911. In the intervening years the children lived in the Old Stage Inn with their widowed mother and took possession of their acreage as they married.7
Marriage17 Sep 1890 Fannie married Nicholas Oglesby on 17 Sep 1890 in Washington County, Virginia.5
Cens-19006 Jun 1900  In the first years after their marriage Nicholas and Fannie lived with several of Nicholas' siblings in the Lead Mine District of Wythe County. Despite the name of the district, the men in the household were listed as farmers, not miners. Nicholas and Fannie were the parents of 3 children by 1900.8
Cens-Sum  By 1910 the family had returned to Washington County, where the 1920 census enumerated them on the Old Stage Rd. No doubt they lived on the land Fannie inherited from her grandfather. Their neighbors in 1920 and 1930 included Fannie's brother William who provided a home for the siblings' mother and sister Elizabeth. Although the 1910 and 1920 census records describe Nicholas as a farmer, the 1930 entry lists his occupation as "surveyor."1,9,10
