William Hicks1

b. circa 1806
BirthCircacirca 1806 William Hicks was born circa 1806.2
Marriage7 Apr 1836 He married Eliza Leedy, daughter of Joseph Leedy, on 7 Apr 1836 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Cens-18505 Aug 1850  William and Eliza spent the first years of their married life in Washington County where William worked as a carpenter. In 1850 the household also included 5 children: Margaret (13), Elen (12), William (10), Robert (8) and Rufus (6).2
Cens-18601 Oct 1860  Ten years later the 4 youngest children were again enumerated at home. William Sr. was noted to be a master carpenter; William Jr. also worked in the trade while daughter Ellen was employed as a seamstress.3
Cens-18707 Jun 1870  1870 found William and Eliza living in Maury County, Tennessee where William again worked as a carpenter.4
Cens-18804 Jun 1880  They probably did not remain there long as the 1880 census recorded them living in Greene County, Missouri with daughter Ellen and her husband William Whitaker. The younger couple's household also included 7 children (Maggie, William, John, Edward, Virginia, Ida and Moses). The 3 older children were born in Tennessee. Eight year old Edward and his younger siblings were born in Missouri, suggesting the family probably moved west in the early 1870s.5
Several of Eliza's siblings had settled in Greene County years earlier.
