Birth3 Nov 1818 John M. Maiden was born on 3 Nov 1818 according to his headstone. However his death record reported his birth took place on May 22, 1818 in Augusta County, Virginia.3,4
Migration  A few years after his birth, John's parents moved from Augusta County south to Botetourt County where John spent most of his childhood. He was the second child, and second son in a family of 11 children who survived to maturity.
Marr Bond19 Nov 1838 He and Charlotte Ann Ritchie were issued a marriage bond on 19 Nov 1838 in Botetourt County, Virginia.5
John's parents and several of his siblings moved further south, settling in Washington County, Virginia in the 1840s. However John and Charlotte did not join them but remained in Botetourt where they lived adjacent to the Ritchies.1
Cens-185030 Sep 1850 The 1850 federal census for Botetourt County, the first one to list all members of a household, enumerated John and Charlotte with 5 children ranging in age from 10 year old Mary to 1 year old John.6
The couple's first child, a son named James, was born and died in 1839.
Migration Sometime between 1856 and 1857 John and Charlotte moved south to Washington County and joined the rest of the family who had already settled there. John sold the last of his Botetourt County land in 1857 and according to The Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families, he moved his family south at that time. However, the marriage record of daughter Georgia, who was born in Jul 1856, indicates that she was born in Washington County.7,8
GuardianJan 1859  On January 24, 1859 John's daughter Elizabeth petitioned the Washington County court to name her father as her guardian. She stated that she had a small legacy due her in Botetourt County. The following day the court appointed John guardian of both Elizabeth and her sister Evaline.9
Cens-Sum  John and Charlotte settled in the Saltville district of the county, where other family members lived in the vicinity of Maiden Creek. However, John does not appear to have been a farmer like so many of his relatives. The 1860 census listed his occupation as "shinglemaker"; in 1870 he was a "mechanic"; in 1880 his occupation is not clear except for the word "machine". Son Charles was employed that year in a grist mill; perhaps John was working in a similiar capacity. The census recorded Charles as crippled or disabled. It also noted that neither John nor Charlotte could read or write. Although not a farmer, John lived on or near the land settled by his parents some years prior. In 1860 John, his widowed father and 5 of his 6 adult brothers were all recorded as heads of neighboring households (brothers George and Noah were still living with their father).

John and Charlotte had 10 children together, but by 1900 only 5 were living. One of the children who was deceased was their daughter Elizabeth, who died in Sept. 1865, a year after her husband's death in the Civil War and 16 days after the death of her son. Elizabeth and Samuel Broughman had settled in Eastern Tennessee, much of which remained loyal to the Union. Samuel died while serving as a Union soldier. John and Charlotte raised Elizabeth's surviving child Mary Alice Broughman from the time she was a young girl. The month after Elizabeth's death, on Oct. 20th 1865, John and Charlotte's 5 year old daughter Emma died of flux. John's brother William experienced similiar tragedy; all told the 2 brothers lost 3 children to flux (severe diarrhea or dysentery) in an 8 day period.

In 1900 John and Charlotte were enumerated as members of their son-in-law, Milton Bondurant's household. This probably does not reflect an actual move on their part but simply that the younger couple (Milt was married to John and Charlotte's youngest child) had assumed the responsibilities of running the household. John and Charlotte's census entry states that they had been married 61 years.10,11,12,13
Milit-Pens16 Mar 1904  John applied for a Confederate Civil War pension in March 1904. He gave his residence as Shortsville, Virginia. John had served as a conscript guard for 5 months and was discharged in 1863. Due to the infirmities of old age (he was 85) he was entitled to a pension of $30 a year.14
WidowedMar 1909  Charlotte died in March 1909 at 87.
Cens-191019 Apr 1910  The following spring John was again recorded as a member of his daughter and son-in-law's household on Maiden Creek Road. John was 91 years old.15
Death25 May 1913 John died on 25 May 1913 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 94.3,16
Burial He was buried at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3

Research Comment:

The Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families (Sarah Finch Maiden Rollins 1991) lists 12 children for John and Charlotte, however, I believe this is not correct. Charlotte was alive at the time of the 1900 census; her entry reports that she was the mother of 10 children, 5 of whom were living. Mrs. Rollins reports a son George (child #9 b. 1857) and a daughter Mary (child #11, b. 1861) that I believe warrant further discussion. John and Charlotte had a daughter Georgia Alice, born 5 July 1856, whose headstone clearly states both her full name and date of birth. But the 1870 census for Washington County, which was poorly enumerated, lists a 13 year old male named George in John and Charlotte's household. There was no daughter Georgia Alice listed although she would have been abt 14 years old and still at home. I believe Mrs. Rollins inadvertently added this "George" as an additional child when the person enumerated was actually Georgia Alice.

Secondly, Mrs. Rollins appears to have added Mary based on her appearance in John and Charlotte's household in 1870. However it is important to note that the 9 year old Mary is listed at the bottom of the household, after 7 year old Fannie. This is the typical format used by the enumerator when a child was not part of the core family group. I believe Mary was actually Mary Alice Broughman, John and Charlotte's 9 year old granddaughter, who they are known to have raised following the death of Mary's mother, John and Charlotte's older daughter Elizabeth (see above). Mary was enumerated as 19 year old Mary Broughman in John and Charlotte's household in 1880; there is no other indication of a daughter Mary who might have been John and Charlotte's daughter.
