Birth11 Oct 1861 Mary Alice Broughman was born on 11 Oct 1861 in Claiborne County, Tennessee.1
Childhood  Mary Alice's early years were filled with tragedy. Her father died during the Civil War when Mary Alice was less than 3 years old. Her mother was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a son she named Samuel 3 months after her husband's death. But baby Samuel died in August, 1865 at 10 months of age. And Mary Alice's mother died 16 days later. Not yet 4, Mary Alice was an orphan.
Ward1866  She became the ward of Milkijah Nash who continued successful efforts to obtain a Civil War pension on Mary Alice's behalf.1
24 Oct 1867 On 24 Oct 1867 a Nancy Lynch testified that she was Mary Alice's "adopted" mother. This was apparently an informal arrangement that was in place for a few years.1
Cens-187023 Sep 1870  Whatever the arrangement, it must have been temporary since by 1870 Mary Alice appears to be a member of the household of her maternal grandparents, John and Charlotte Maiden in Washington County, Virginia.2
Cens-188010 Jun 1880  This was confirmed by the 1880 census, on which Mary was enumerated living with John and Charlotte in the Saltville district of Washington County. She was identified as John's granddaughter.3
Ward  During these years Mary was the ward of John H. Barr, whose guardian records list various payments to "J.C. Maiden" for Mary's care.4
Marriage21 Sep 1880 She married William Patrick Carpenter, son of James Carpenter and Margaret Ann Ryburn, on 21 Sep 1880 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.5,6
Cens-190019 Jun 1900 William and Mary Alice remained in Tennessee for some years as all of their children were born in that state. However, by 1900 they had moved across the Virginia border back into Washington County.7
Cens-191018 Apr 1910 Sometime between 1900 and 1910 they made a much larger move, settling in Ft. Worth, Texas, where William worked as a carpenter. The 1910 census recorded that Mary was the mother of 3 children, but only the youngest, 14 year old son Leroy, was enumerated in Texas with them.8,9
William and Mary Alice had adopted Leory as a young child.10
William and Mary Alice's daughter and son-in-law (Ritchie and Thomas Barnes) also made the move to Texas, and were there by at least 1905 when their only child was born. However, Ritchie and Thomas did not remain in Texas, moving on to Oklahoma before 1910.
Migration1912 Around 1912-1913 William and Mary Alice also left Texas for Oklahoma. At about the same time their eldest son, Frank, and his wife Grace, who were living in West Virginia, joined them.11
Cens-192019 Jun 1920  Both couples settled on 6th Street in Oklahoma City.12
Somewhere in this time frame, William and Mary Alice, along with Ritchie and Bonnie, briefly returned to Virginia, possibly to help Frank and his family prepare for their move from West Virginia. A Carpenter family reunion was held in Virginia; a treasured photo records the event (see below).13
Cens-19302 Apr 1930 By 1930 William and Mary Alice had moved to 616 N. Laird Street in Oklahoma City. They reported that year that they owned their home and that it was valued at $2,500. One of the questions unique to that years census asked whether there was a radio in the home; the family replied that there was not.14
Death1 Apr 1939 Mary died on 1 Apr 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at age 77.15
