                                                            THE BEATTY FAMILY

(From The Columbus Sunday Dispatch, Columbus, O.)
                                                           December 23, 1934.

George Beatty was born about 1735 either in Chester County, Pa., or in London, Britain.  His father, William Beatty, is on the tax list there in 1737 and 1740, as of London, Britain.
In 1749 William Beatty and Martha his wife were living in Maryland and their children were: George, Martha, William, John, Agnes, and probably Charles, all of Frederick County, Maryland.
George Beatty married Ann Cullen of Baltimore County, Maryland.  He was a soldier of the French and Indian War, enlisting August 13, 1757, in Capt. Peter Butler’s Company, Frederick County, Maryland.  Sometime before 1765 he moved to Frederick County, Virginia, to that part afterwards became Hampshire Co.  He became a large land owner here and lived on Mill Creek about 15 miles south of Romney.  In 1802 the homestead farm contained 139 acres.  In 1778 he enlisted as a private in Capt. Reuben Criscoe’s Company under Lieut.-Colnel (sic) William Heth, Hampshire County, Va., American Revolution.
From the large number of deeds, grantor and grantee, to be found in the recorder’s office at Romney we are able to get a complete record of George Beatty and his family.  He left no will and no administration is to be found of his estate, but in 1811 and there-after eight of his children were made deeds conveying each their one-ninth interest in their father’s estate on to Abram Hawk, a bother of Henry Hawk, who married Alsha Beatty.  His nine children were: Isaac, Robert, John, Alsha (Hawk), Charles, Mary Ann (Miller), Henry, Jennie and Levi.
Today many of the name Beatty are living in Hampshire County, Va. (now W. Va.),
