Dear Mrs. Hutchens:

  I was born in 1881 in the home of John Brackenridge Beattie of Andrew Co. Mo.  He married a sister of my grandfather Cole.  Recently I have been trying to discovr [sic] the true relationship of the family to which J.B. Beattie belonged, and the family of your father.  I am quite sure they were related.  David Beattie was father of J.B. Beattie, ab-ve [above], and had other sons named James who lived in Andrew Co., and Armstrong (“Strong”) who also lived in Andrew.  If there was another child, I have no record of it, except I know there were some girls.  I feel sure your father was a cousin of these people and that all of these families came from Washington Co. Va.

  I have been in correspondence with your niece, Mrs. Frank Denny of Savannah, who gave me your name and address, hence this letter.  I am in hopes that you can tell me something about the ancestry of your father, about his brothers and sisters, and when he came to Andrew County and from where.  You would oblige me greatly if you would fill out the enclosed questionnaire, giving me your recollection of the facts.  I am very anxious to find, if it can be found the family bible or family record of your parents.

  I trust you will not lay this aside, but will give me an immediate reply.  I assure you that anything I have regarding the Beatties which seems to fit your family will be gladly exchanged.  I have a mass of Virginia data, and much about the Beatties who came to Missouri, but so far I cannot find a place to locate your Beattie branch.
