Mrs. B. G. Thatcher,
Longa, [Logan] Utah.

Dear Mrs. Thatcher:

I am not sure whether I owe you a letter, or whether it is the other way around.  I seem to have had a letter from you dated Oct. 8th, and I do not find that I answered it.  Anyway this is not an answer to a letter but a few words to explain a singular fact which came to my attention last night.

For several years I have know one Charles P Gilmor [sic] of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He formerly worked for the company with which I am employed.  Last night I went to his home to discover what relation he was to some of the Virginia Families of whom I am collecting records, and discovered he was a direct descendent of JOSIAH N. BEATTIE.  He said he had visited the grave of Josiah N. Beattie at Savannah, and noted this on the grave stone “In Memory of Josiah N. Beattie, b. May 29, 1797, died April 14, 1845.  This corresponds with the data you sent.  He did not have data regarding Josiah’s first marriage and family, but gave me data supplied by someone showing that he had by his first wife: Sidney who went to Utah; James who to Utah and Montana and one called “Tuck” who “went into the Rebel Army”.  With his data was a note indicating these or some of these were once in Saline or Lafayette County.

The Second wife of Josiah N. Beattie was Mrs. Kizziah (Ford) Evans, a widow, b. July 24, 1801, and married Mr. Beattie Oct. 4, 1838.  She was daughter of Zachariah Ford and wife Kizziah, of Virginia, who went to Pulaski County, Ky.  J. N. Beattie had by this second wife, three children: C. Columbus Beattie, b July 12, 1839, d. May 11, 1842; Josiah Donald Beattie, b. Jan. 15, 1841, d. April 29, 1867. unm. and MARY VIRGINIA BEATTIE, b. Dec. 24, 1842, d. Sept. 12, 1898, m ROBERT MCALISTER GILMORE, b. Pulaski County, Va. [Kentucky?] April 27, 1858.  R. M. Gilmore, was son of Anderson Smith Gilmore (b. 1809) and his wife Nancy McAlister; grandson of John Gilmore (b. 1805 [sic]) and Mary Smith, and great grandson of one James Gilmore, wife Martha McElwee (McKelwee), of Lincoln Co. Ky.

Robert McAlester [sic] Gilmore had by his wife Mary Virginia Beattie, only two children: Cyrus Beattie Gilmore, b. July 19, 1859, m. Elizabeth McQuary, and Nancy Gilmore, b. July 24, 1861, m. John Bruce Bobbitt.  This family lived in Pulaski County,, Ky.  Cyrus Beattie Gilmore, was father of my friend, Chas. R. of Tulsa, Okla.

Mrs. Kizzie (Ford) Evans-Beattie, married a third time, a Mr. Farris, but had no issue by him.  She had first married Josiah Evans, and had by him six children.

Perhaps this will help you.  Oh, yes I have data about WILLIAM BEATTIE, the brother of Josiah N. and who married Rhoda White.  Do you have this?
     Yours sincerely,

     Redmond S Cole,
     Box 92, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
