Cens-Sum  John and Sarah owned land in Washington County where they raised at least 9 children. John appears to have been quite successful, owning land valued at $10,000 in 1860.4,2 
Court Record26 Nov 1879  However by late 1879 John was not well. Court records filed in November of that year indicate that John had been determined to be a "lunatic"; R.R. Hughes had been appointed as his "committee" [person who was responsible for John's welfare and estate]. Charges against John's estate included the cost of a wagon hired to take him to jail, the cost of his care while in jail, $10.97 for repairs to the mill and $100 paid to John's wife Sally Buchanan for support.5 
Cens-188018 Jun 1880  John appears to have then lived with his son James, in whose household he was recorded in 1880. John was 68; the enumerator's entry noted that he was insane. Sally was not present in the household.6
