b. circa 1812, d. after 1880
BirthCirca | circa 1812 | Ann Ryburn was born in Indiana circa 1812.2 |
Marriage | 13 Jan 1831 | She married Robert Nelson, son of Adam Nelson and Nancy Shirk, on 13 Jan 1831 in Franklin County, Indiana.1 |
| | Almost two years earlier, Ann's widowed father had married Robert's widowed mother. And the previous year Ann's sister, Margaret, had married Robert's brother David. |
Land-Buy | 29 Nov 1836 | In 1835 Robert brought suit in Franklin County court in order to facilitate the partitioning of his father's lands. The court decided the land could not be fairly divided and ordered that it be sold instead, with the proceeds divided among all the heirs. After 100 acres were laid off as their mother's dower, Robert, with his siblings David and Andrew purchased the remaining land.3 |
Land-Sell | 28 Aug 1839 | On 28 Aug 1839 the 3 brothers and their wives sold 80 acres of the same land to Richard Tyner for $500. The land was described as the west half of the northwest quarter of section number 9 in township 8 of range two west. Robert and Ann were living in neighboring Fayette County, Indiana when the deed was recorded.4 |
Migration | between 1839 and 1840 | Shortly after the sale Robert and Ann moved to Missouri, settling on land in what was at that time Shelby County. David and Ann Nelson also made the move. |
Cens-1840 | 1840 | The two couples were recorded as adjacent households when the 1840 federal census for Shelby County, Missouri, was taken. Robert was enumerated as the head of his household. Hash marks indicate the presence of a 30-39 year old male [Robert], a 20-29 year old female [Ann] and 4 children under 10.5 |
| | Beginning in 1850 Robert and Ann's census location was recorded as Fabius Township in Knox County [Missouri]. This does not necessarily mean they had moved from their 1840 residence. Knox County did not exist in 1840. Prior to that time the southern end of what would later be Knox County (including at least part of Fabius Township) was part of Shelby County and then for a few years Scotland County. |
Cens-Sum | | Ann and Robert were enumerated on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census schedules for Fabius Township. In 1850 the household included 7 children but as the years passed the household became smaller. The eldest child, John, was listed as head of the adjacent family in 1860. In 1870 only Joseph and Margaret remained at home although a younger Robert Nelson (age 4) and a 7 year old named William Mason were living with them. Robert reported that his land was valued at $4,000 and he owned personal property of $3,000. By 1880 Robert was 74 and Ann was 67. Of interest that year was the census question which asked for the first time where a person's mother and father were born. Ann replied that her parents were both born in Virginia.2,6,7,8 |
| 16 Feb 1882 | Several Ancestry.com trees report Ann's date of death as 16 Feb. 1882, however I have not been able to identify the source of the date. |
