Birth9 Jan 1880 Evelyn Preston was born on 9 Jan 1880 in Virginia.4,5
Her name was originally Eveline, no doubt named for her paternal grandmother, Evaline Gray. However the younger woman preferred Evelyn and used that variation, or more often Eva, throughout her adult life.6
Marriage14 Jun 1906 She married John Buchanan Edmondson, son of Samuel Porter Edmondson and Elizabeth Katherine Alderson, on 14 Jun 1906 in Lodi, Washington County, Virginia.1
Evelyn's first cousin, Carrie Preston, was married to John's brother Andrew.
Migration  Evelyn and John settled in in Oklahoma shortly after their marriage. Their first 2 children, Margaret and Rose were born there in 1907 and 1908. Rosa and Calvin Fleming, with whom John had lived in Texas prior to his marriage to Evelyn, were already in Oklahoma, having moved there from Texas around 1902. The 2 couples lived in what became Tillman County in 1907 but which had been Comanche territory through 1901 and then Comanche County in the Oklahoma Territory until statehood in 1907.
Cens-19101910 However, Evelyn and John did not stay in Oklahoma. Sometime prior to the 1910 census they moved on to Clayton, Union County, New Mexico, where they were recorded on that years enumeration. The couple's daughter Rose died in 1909 so the household consisted of John, Evelyn and their 3 year old daughter Margaret.5
Several of John's siblings followed similiar migration patterns. His younger brother Samuel also spent some time in Oklahoma (daughter Sarah b. there in 1906), however he and his family returned to settle in Tennessee around 1908 or 1909. John's younger brother, Sidney, a physician, also lived in Oklahoma for a few years (daughter Tommie b. OK 1908) before he too moved on to Union County, New Mexico. Shortly after the 1910 census John's parents joined him in Union County. Other siblings also made the move.
Land-Patent19 May 1914 Evelyn and John homesteaded 320 acres of land in Union County for which they received a patent on 19 May 1914. The acreage consisted of several parcels of land, primarily situated in section 24, township 27 north, range 36 east.7,8
Cens-19206 Jan 1920 Two years later Evelyn and John were recorded on the 1920 census enumeration for Union County. John, age 44, stated that he was a farmer. He owned his own farm, although it was mortgaged. The household now included John and Evelyn and 4 children: Margaret (12), Mary (8), William (6) and John Jr. (6 months).9
Cens-19306 Apr 1930  By 1930 daughter Margaret was no longer living at home, but the family had expanded with the addition of daughter Rebecca, born in 1921.10
DeathApr 1978 Evelyn died in Apr 1978 probably in Minco, Grady County, Oklahoma, at age 98.4

  8. [S16] John received his patent under the authority of the enlarged Homestead Act of 1909 which increased the acreage a settler could receive from 160 to 320 acres. This was done to encourage development of lands that did not have a ready water source. In 1912, the residency requirement for homesteading was shortened from 5 to 3 years (source: E.
