Birth23 Sep 1845 Reuben Bradley Preston was born on 23 Sep 1845 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4,2 
 He was named for his mother's first husband (likewise, an older sister was named for his father's first wife). 
Military13 May 1863 During the Civil War Reuben served 3 years with Company D of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, sustaining wounds to both his shoulder and head. Reuben's brother, Thomas, served in the same company. Reuben's Confederate compiled service record states that he enlisted May 13, 1863 at Abingdon, went home sick on Sept. 16, 1863, returned to his company, and was wounded on Nov. 27th 1863 at Raccoon Ford [the Battle of Raccoon Ford actually took place on Sept. 14, 1863]. Reuben was taken to a receiving hospital in Richmond and on the 29th was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital. He was 17 years old. Reuben was furloughed for 40 days on December 3rd, 1863 and reappeared on the company muster roll the following spring.5,6,7 
Marriage13 Jan 1869 He married Isabella J. Moore, daughter of John Buchanan Moore and Margaret Ann Graham, on 13 Jan 1869 in Washington County, Virginia.2 
Cens-18803 Jun 1880  Reuben and Isabella were enumerated on the 1880 census for Washington County, along with Maggie 8 and George 5.8 
Cens-190027 Jun 1900  Twenty years later the couple were recorded in the Holston District of the county. They had been married 31 years. Isabella stated that she was the mother of 5 children, 4 of whom were living.9 
  This total does not appear to include several children who died at birth or in infancy. 
Widowed6 Jan 1903  Reuben was widowed when Isabella died on 6 Jan 1903. 
Cens-19101 Apr 1910  Reuben continued to make his home with his youngest sons Walter and Thomas. Walter had married abt 1907; his wife and daughter were also part of the household. Ruben's brother William appears to have been living close by.10 
Death18 Feb 1924 Reuben died on 18 Feb 1924 at age 78.3 
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3
