Legatee17 Mar 1823 Joseph's father wrote his will in March 1823. He left Joseph a gray mare, a spotted colt and his old rifle gun. In addition, Joseph and his brother Arthur were to divide their father's farming tools. The two men were also each to receive $200 from the sale of their father's land, as well as a share of the remainder of his estate. Joseph and Arthur served as their father's executor.2
William Stewart's will suggests that Joseph had a close relationship with his older brother Arthur. This was no doubt further strengthened when Joseph married Sarah Buchanan, who was the younger sister of Arthur's wife, Mary.
