Birth16 Feb 1844 John Franklin Dunn was born on 16 Feb 1844 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Fath-Death22 Aug 1845  John's father died when John was only 1 year old.
Cens-18501850  John's mother remained on the family land on the North fork of the Holston River where she was enumerated as the head of the family in 1850. John's sister Mary and her husband John Cuddy were also part of the household and no doubt helped with the farm work. The household also included John's older brothers Theophilus (13), William (10) and Robert (8).4
Military3 May 1863  John and his brother Robert both served in Company C of the 22nd Virginia Cavalry during the Confederate War. They enlisted together in Washington County on 3 May 1863. Their older brother Theophilus joined a few months later. John eventually served as the company's corporal. He was noted as absent without leave during Oct. 1864. Timewise, this corresponded with Theophilus' capture and transfer to the Union prison at Ft. Delaware.5
Following the war John's brothers William and Robert migrated to Missouri where their uncle William Dunn had settled in the 1840s. Theophilus remained in Washington Co. for some years, however later he too moved to Missouri.
Marriage1 Sep 1870 John married Martha Washington Linder, daughter of Daniel Linder, on 1 Sep 1870 in Washington County.1,2
Occupation At the time of his marriage John was employed as a carpenter. He may have briefly worked with his brother Theophilus who was a cabinet maker.2
However John was primarily a farmer. He and Martha lived on the McCullock-Dunn family land where Martha gave birth to 14 children, the first child born in 1871 and the last in 1896. Two children died in infancy. It is perhaps interesting that of the 12 children who grew to adulthood 7 remained single. They were enumerated on a series of census records living in the North fork district of Washington County where John was listed as a farmer and his sons as farm laborers.6,7,8
Widowed  Martha died in March 1919 and was buried in the McCulloch-Cuddy Cemetery with the couple's two sons who died in infancy. Son Chester died in 1922 and was also buried there, as are many other family members.
Cens-193024 Apr 1930  In 1930 John, at age 86, was again recorded as the head of the household. The 1930 census was interesting in that it asked each household if they owned a radio. John's entry indicated that he did indeed own a radio. John's daughters, Elizabeth (50), Margaret (48) and Clara (27) ran the household while William (45), Victor (38) and Orville (26) tended the farm.9
Death17 or 18 Oct 1932 John died on Oct. 17 or 18, 1932.10,11
Burial He was buried at McCullock-Cuddy Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3
