Mary Jane and David lived in the North Fork district of Washington County. By the spring of 1861 they were the parents of a son William and 3 young daughters, Sarah, Leonah and Mary. However tragedy struck the family in July 1862 when a diptheria epidemic struck the community. In a five day period, from July 25 through July 29, all 3 little girls died. Mary Jane was pregnant at the time and gave birth to son Robert that December.4

Following the Civil War two of Mary Jane's brothers left Virginia and settled in Harrison County, Missouri where they established a dry goods business. In 1879 David and Mary Jane's oldest son, William "Frank" Cuddy joined them. When he reached adulthood, their youngest child John followed too.
Cens-190014 Jun 1900  At the turn of the century David and Mary Jane had been married 50 years. Mary Jane's census entry in 1900 stated that she was the mother of 7 children, but only 3 were living. The couple's only surviving child living in Virginia, son Robert, lived nearby with his wife and 3 children.7
