Legatee8 Oct 1860  Mary's father wrote his will on Oct. 8, 1860 in Washington County, Virginia. He left Mary $100 "in consideration of extra services rendered by her". She also received a 1/7 share (as did her 6 siblings) in her father's estate. Caleb died later that month.2 
Marriagebetween Oct 1860 and Nov 1868 She married Houston Garrett between Oct 1860 and Nov 1868. Mary was single when her father wrote his will. In Nov. 1868 Houston, as her husband, received the first of several distributive payments from the estate.3 
Cens-18805 Jun 1880 At the time of the 1880 census enumeration Mary and Houston lived in the Goodson District of Washington County. The household was headed by Houston's father. Both men were farmers; Houston's father, T.H. Garrett was also a dry goods merchant.7 
WidowedMar 1898  Mary was widowed in March 1898. 
Cens-Sum  In the first years after Houston's death she lived with his sister Jennie and her husband Dr. William Phillips. Later she made her home with her nephew, William Smyth and his sister Lea.8,9 
DeathDec 1922 Mary died in Dec 1922 in Washington County, Virginia, as the result of an accidental fall in a hallway.5,1 
Burial She was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
