Birth30 Nov 1837 Rev. Tobias F. Smyth was born on 30 Nov 1837 in Illinois.1 
Cens-185010 Aug 1850  In 1850 Tobias lived with his grandfather, Tobias Smyth and his grandfather's second wife Rachel in Washington County, Virginia.5 
  Tobias's parents remained in Illinois where William Smyth died in 1853. 
Education  While in Virginia Tobias studied at Emory and Henry College.1 
Cens-18601860  In 1860 Tobias was enumerated in the Washington Co. household of John Daugherty. Tobias owned personal property worth $700 and was employed as a teacher. Neighboring households included his grandfather and his uncles James K. Smyth and John S. Smyth.6 
Military  During the first year of the Civil War Tobias served as a private in the King's Mountain Rifles.7 
Religion1862  In 1862 Tobias became a Methodist minister. He was known as a learned man with a meek and gracious spirit.1 
Marriage22 Sep 1868 He married Orrie T. Brown on 22 Sep 1868.8 
Legatee20 Jan 1872  Tobias remained close to his grandfather Tobias Smyth who left the younger man 1/7th of his estate in his 1872 will.9 
Land-Buy  Additionally, in 1879 Tobias purchased the interest of his uncle James K. Smyth and his aunts Nancy and Elizabeth Smyth in two tracts of land near Emory and Henry College which had been left to them by Tobias. 
  For some years Tobias suffered from poor health and was not able to actively practice his ministry. 
Cens-18803 Jun 1880  During one of these periods he and Orrie lived with her brother Robert Brown and his family. They were recorded in the Brown household in the Glade Spring district of Washington County in 1880.10 
  In 1881 he returned to the ministry for a few years.1 
Death31 Jan 1893 Tobias died on 31 Jan 1893 in Sweetwater, Tennessee, at age 55.8,1 
Burial He was buried at Smyth's Chapel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.11
