Cens-185010 Aug 1850  John and Elizabeth settled into a small home near his parents and older brother after their marriage. The 1850 census enumerated John at age 32, Elizabeth at age 27 and baby William, age one.7 
Cens-186030 Jun 1860  The 1860 census did not indicate that John owned any real estate but he did own personal property valued at $650.8 
Cens-188015 Jun 1880  The 1880 census reported that John and "Lizzie" lived in the Saltville District of Washington County. The household that year included 61 year old John, 58 year old Lizzie and the couple's 5 surviving children: William Frank (30, married [wife not present], occupation entered as "retired lawyer"), George (25, farm laborer), Mollie (19) and 17 year old twins Tobias and Robert.9 
Death29 Apr 1889 John died on 29 Apr 1889 at age 71.4,1,10,11 
Burial He was buried at Smyth's Chapel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4,5
