 John is listed as 10 yrs of age on the 1860 census, 21 years of age on the 1870 census and 31 years of age on the 1880 census all of which are consistent with the 1849 year of birth recorded on his cemetery stone. At first glance John does not appear to be on the 1850 census, however, there is a John C. Kestner listed with Philip and Jane that year. His age appears to have been recorded as 34 but the ages of two other members of the household were recorded incorrectly so this entry may also have been in error.3,2,5 
Cens-Sum John did not marry. He is listed living with his parents in the Glade Spring district of Washington County, Virginia on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 federal census records.3,5,2 
Cens-1910May 1910  By 1910, with both of his parents deceased, John, as the eldest son, was listed as the head of the household. His four surviving siblings were living with him; ranging in age from forty-nine to sixty-three. John and his brother Winfield were running the family farm which was listed as being on "Rock Rd, south of Meadow View."6" 
Death8 Dec 1920 John died on 8 Dec 1920 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 71.4,1 
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
