BirthCircacirca 1827 Jane B. Davis was born in Smyth County, Virginia, circa 1827.4,5
Marriage13 Oct 1845 She married Philip Kesner on 13 Oct 1845 in Smyth County, Virginia.1
Cens-18502 Aug 1850 Five years after their marriage Phillip and Jane were recorded on the 1850 census of Washington County, Virginia. Their two year old daughter Jane was also enumerated, as were four other adults with the Kesnor surname (John C. 34, Florence S. 25, Christiana 39, Jane 32). They may have been Philip's siblings. It is also possible that John and Florence were actually Jane and Phillip's children and were enumerated with incorrect ages. The family included two children with those given names who were born prior to the 1850 census date and who should have been present when the household was enumerated.4
Cens-186013 Jul 1860 Ten years later Philip and Jane were again recorded with their children. This year they were listed as: Jane 13, Florence 11, John 10, Sarah 8, Adaline 5 and Mildred, two. Philip listed his occupation as "farmer" and stated that he owned real estate valued at $7,000 and personal property valued at $6,000.6
Cens-1860- Slave10 Aug 1860  This included 5 slaves who were part of the household in 1860.7
ResidenceJun 1866  Daughter Jane married "at the residence of her father near Cedarville" in the Summer of 1866.8
Cedarville is located on the Lee Highway (11) about 1 1/2 miles south of Meadowview.
Cens-187030 Sep 1870 The 1870 census described the location as Glade Spring township. Philip was still farming but reported that his real estate was now worth $3,000 and his personal property was worth $400, a loss of value probably reflective of the Civil War. John, Florence, Sarah, Adaline (enumerated as A.J.) and Winfield (enumerated as W. S.) were still living with their parents. Mildred did not appear on the 1870 census, suggesting perhaps that she had died in the intervening years.9
Cens-188019 Jun 1880 Phillip apparently died between 1870 and 1880 as Jane was enumerated on her own in 1880 and listed as widowed or divorced. John, Florence, Adaline and Winfield were still single and living at home with her. Daughter Jane, who had married William Campbell in 1866, was again living at home in 1880 and was listed as Jennie Kestner. Jane's daughter Sarah had married Samuel Thompson; the couple were also living with Jane.10
Deathafter 1880  Jane died after 1880.
Though two of Jane and Philip's daughters married the other four children who lived to adulthood remained single. None of Jane and Philip's children had children of their own.
