Caledonia McNew1

b. 17 April 1849, d. 22 January 1934
FatherElbert McNew2 b. Jan 1814
MotherBetsy Lee2
Birth17 Apr 1849 Caledonia McNew was born on 17 Apr 1849 in Virginia.2
Marriage22 Sep 1870 She married Robert E.B. Clark, son of Mathew Ryburn Clark and Isabella Louisa Fullen, on 22 Sep 1870 in Washington County, Virginia.3
23 Sep 1870 They were both 21.
Cens-18806 Jun 1880 Robert and Caledonia were married a few months after the 1870 census was recorded. They appear together for the first time in 1880, where they were enumerated in the Glade Spring District of Washington County, Virginia, along with the following children: Angeline 9, David C. 7, William R. 4, Verlin [sp?] 2/12 (born April) and Mary E., two (Mary was listed out of sequence).4
Cens-190011 Jun 1900 Unfortunately, with the loss of the 1890 census there is a twenty year gap before this family was again enumerated. In 1900 they were still in the Glade Spring District where Robert was listed as a fifty year old farmer who had been married 32 years [actually 30]. Caledonia was fifty-one and stated that she was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom were living. In the household with them were the following people: Angeline 29, (dau), Clinton 21 (son), David 18 (son), Fullen 16 (son), Robert Lee 14 (son), Bessie 10 (dau), Elbert 7 (dau), Josie Clark 22 (dau-in-law) married 3 years, mother of two children, 1 [or 2] living, Pierson Clark [sp?] 1 (grandson), David Bozell 3 (grandson), Elbert McNew 86 (father-in-law).1
The only child clearly indicated on both the 1880 and 1900 census was Angeline. However, additional research reveals that the son indicated as Verlon in 1880 (noted as born in April 1880) was the same person as the child recorded as Clinton in 1900 at which time he was recorded with a birth date of April 1879. However Clinton's World War I draft registration established that he was actually born April 9, 1880. Oddly, Robert and Caledonia later gave the name Verlin Fullen to a son born in Oct. 1884 (full name and birth date from his WWI draft registration). The 1900 census lists him as Fullen, born Oct. 1883.

It also appears that the son David C., recorded in 1880 at age 7 cannot be the same David as the one enumerated in 1900 with a middle initial of J. and a May 1882 date of birth (confirmed by WWI draft registration). The first David no doubt accounts for one of the children noted as deceased by 1900. It also appears that daughter Mary was deceased since her son was enumerated living in Robert and Caledonia's household.
Cens-191027 Apr 1910 The 1910 census is also somewhat confusing. Caledonia was again listed as the mother of 10 children, of whom 7 were living. Also enumerated at home were sons Robert and Verlin [recorded as Vearl], as well as a 15 year old recorded as Mack. Camet Bozell (14) was listed as a grandson, as was Lizzie Little (age 6).5
Lizzie was the child of Robert and Caledonia's daughter Angeline, who may have been the additional child who died between 1900 and 1910. The 15 year old 'Mack" was probably son Elbert. Robert and Verlin were enumerated twice in 1910 - once with their parents and also as boarders in a home in Saltville where they were employed by the Mathieson Alkali Plant. Both entries list Verlin as divorced (his second marriage record stated he was widowed).
Robert and Caledonia probably raised their grandson Campbell Bozell as he was recorded in their home in 1900, 1910 and 1920.6
Cens-193025 Apr 1930  Following Robert's death, Caledonia, in her 80s, lived with Verlin and his family.7
Death22 Jan 1934 Caledonia died on 22 Jan 1934 in Washington County at age 84.2
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Virginia.2
