Birth8 Sep 1824 Nancy Catherine Davis was born on 8 Sep 1824.5
Marriagebefore 13 Dec 1846 She married Peter S. Hanby, son of John Hanby and Catherine Fulkerson, before 13 Dec 1846.6
Peter had been previously married to Nancy's cousin Lydia Ann Davis
Cens-185020 Sep 1850  Nancy and Peter were enumerated in 1850 on the first census to list all members of the household by name. In addition to Peter (40) and Nancy (26) the household included William (11) [Peter's son from his first marriage], Virginia (4) and Mary (1). They resided in Washington County, Virginia.7
Peter and Nancy had 3 more children after 1850: John, Jonathan and Sarah Jane. However in the late summer of 1854 an outbreak of flux reached the family. Jonathan died on August 29th at 22 months of age. Six year old Virginia died Sept. 1st.
Widowed22 Jun 1856 John died of consumption on 22 Jun 1856. Nancy was 31.
Cens-18602 Oct 1860  Four years later she was enumerated as the head of her own household which also included Polly (11), John (9) and Sallie (5). Nancy owned land valued at $4,000 and personal property worth $1,000. Her neighbors included her sister Jane Trigg, her sister Alcey Bradley and her mother Catherine Davis.8
Cens-1860- Slave15 Sep 1860  The personal property reflected Nancy's ownership of a 20 year old male slave.9
ChildDeath  Although the official census date in 1860 was June 1st, the enumerator did not reach Nancy's household until October 2nd. Eight days later tragedy again struck with the death of 11 year old Polly. Nine year old John died that year as well, although his exact date of death is not known.
Cens-18701870  By 1870 Nancy (who was recorded that year by her "formal" given name of Ann) and her only surviving child, 15 year old Sally [Sarah Jane] resided with Nancy's sister Ailcey [Ailsey, etc.] and her husband David Bradley. The household also included the women's mother, 79 year old Catherine Davis, the Bradley's 2 daughters, and 55 year old Hannah Shetters/Shelton.10 [name not clear in census]
Nancy's daughter Sarah married in the spring of 1873 and gave birth to a son the following year. It is possible Sarah died not long afterwards as no further mention of her has been found.
Will22 Jun 1876 Nancy wrote her will on 22 Jun 1876. In it she stated, "In consideration of the love and affection I bear my sister A. A. Bradley and her husband David O. Bradley, and in grateful recognition of the kindness they have uniformly shown me and my family, and the care and protection they have given and propose to give my grandson, Lee H. Bradley, I give them the amount of money willed to be paid to me by my sister A. A. Bradley by the will of John D. Ornduff" [John Ornduff was the son of Nancy's sister Malinda]. Nancy also remembered her nieces Mary C. and Ann Trigg Bradley, as well as her grandson Lee H. Bradley.1
