Cens-18509 Aug 1850  Following his father's death in 1836 and his mother's subsequent remarriage, William lived with his older brother James in Washington County, Virginia.8 
Guardian23 Aug 1858  By 1858 William, in turn, served as guardian to Mathew and Martha Elizabeth Henderson, the orphaned children of his deceased sister Minerva Ryburn Henderson.9 
Military During the Civil War William served as a private in the Glade Spring Rifles (Co. F) of the 37th Virginia Infantry.10 
Cens-1870Oct 1870 In 1870 William, at age 36, was again making his home in the Glade Spring district of Washington County with his brother James.11 
Cens-1880Jun 1880  Ten years later, he was living by himself in the same vicinity.12 
Marriage3 Dec 1890 He married Melitia Ann Williams, daughter of Granville Williams and Sarah James, on 3 Dec 1890 in Washington County.13,6 
  They did not have children, but raised a niece, Bessie Estella Williams.7,14 
Cens-19101910 When the 1910 census of Washington County was enumerated, William and Ann were living in the Glade Spring precinct with Bessie. William was seventy-five years old and described himself as a farmer. Ann was fifty-two and Bessie was twenty-two.15 
Will10 Sep 1913 William wrote his will on September 10th, 1913, just 16 days before his death. He left his wife Ann all his personal property, household goods and livestock. He also willed her 69 acres of land, including the family residence to be hers during her lifetime. Following her death the land was to pass to John Clark Ryburn, son of William's older brother James who by then was deceased. An additional 24 acres, lying north of the residence, was to be divided between William's niece Margaret Breckenridge Ryburn, his niece Lucy Gilmer Ryburn and his nephew John C. Ryburn (all children of James).16 
Death18 Sep 1913  William died on 18 Sep 1913 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 78.5,17,6 
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County.17 
Will-Recd26 Sep 1913  The will was recorded September 16th, 1913. Ann Ryburn, as executrix, posted bond in the amount of $1,500.16
