Marriage He married Mary Carson Ryburn, daughter of Mathew Ryburn and Martha Orr.4
Guardian26 Dec 1842 Claiborne was named guardian of Jane, Minerva, Mathew and William Ryburn on 26 Dec 1842. The children were his wife's siblings; their father, Mathew Ryburn, died in 1836.5
Cens-185022 Aug 1850 Claiborne and Mary appeared on the 1850 census for Washington County, Virginia with three children: Elizabeth 7, Moses 4 and Zacharia, age one.6
Cens-186010 Jul 1860  Ten years later Mathew Ryburn, Minerva and Mary had been added to the family. Clairborne owned real estate valued at over $10,000 and personal property of $8,900.7
Cens-1860- Slave26 Jul 1860  This included 11 slaves, who ranged in age from 35 to 3 years.8
Cens-1860- Agric  The family farm consisted of 350 acres, of which 200 were "improved". This land was used to raise wheat, Indian corn, oats, Irish potatoes, hay and to produce molasses. The farm was also home to 12 horses, 8 cows, 12 cattle, 43 sheep and 50 swine.9
WidowedFeb 1862 Mary's death in early 1862 left Claiborne a widower. Their daughter, Mary had died the previous year.
Cens-Sum  Claiborne continued to provide a home for his five children, several of whom remained single or did not marry until well into their adult years.10,11
The family lived at what was known as the Shugart Inn, along the old Stage Rd. in the Glade Spring area of Washington County. Early Washington Co. tax records indicate that Claiborne's father Zachariah Shugart, who bought the surrounding land from Philip Griever in 1820, ran an inn for some years.

On April 27th, 1873, a Sunday evening, a fire broke out in the home while several family members were at church. No one was hurt, but the large wood structure was completely destroyed. It was valued at about $3,000 and was not insured.12,13,14
However, it was quickly rebuilt, the date preserved by the carpenter who built the mantels for the new structure which he engraved with the information "[Jos or Jas] Moore August 30/73 built this mantle piece."15

The Bristol News article reporting the loss of Claibourn's home in April, 1873 stated that only Mr. Shugart, his wife and daughter were present, his two sons having gone to church. However I am not aware of any evidence that Claibourn [spelling from newspaper account] had remarried13
