  Prior to the Civil War she was a slave in the household of James Clark and Ann (Ryburn) Clark. Although not enumerated by name, she would have been the 28 year old female tallied in James Clark's slave enumeration in 1860.2,3 
Cohabitation1861  The following year Celie began living with Campbell Scott, a slave owned by Turner Jackson. Virginia laws of the time prohibited them from marrying, however following the war their union was recognized. 
  When the war ended Campbell (who appears in records as Camp or Cam) and Celie continued to live with James Clark whose wife died in 1869. 
Cens-18701870  James Clark's 1870 household included Camp (38, laborer), "C" [Celie] (39), and Earl Scott (4). Camp and Celie could not read or write.4 
Land-Buy1 Mar 1875 On 1 Mar 1875 Campbell and Celia purchased 3 acres of the old James Clark land from James' daughter Isabella B. Smyth and her husband James K. Smyth for $142.18.5 
Cens-188026 Jun 1880  James Clark died in 1871 and in 1880 Campbell and Celie were enumerated as their own household in the Glade Spring District of Washington County. A second son, Alex, had been added to the family.6
