Land-Sell21 Aug 1823  Alexander's maternal grandfather, Thomas Montgomery, left a will in which he left his daughter Margaret, wife of John Beaty, a life estate in a tract of land in Washington County, Virginia. On Margaret's death the land was to pass to her children including Alexander and his brothers John and James. On Aug. 21, 1823 Alexander sold his future interest in this land to John and James for $600.3
Deathbefore 1843 Alexander died before 1843 as he was referred to as deceased in court documents filed that year in Washington County. However the documents also reference an earlier case, probably filed in the late 1820s or early 1830s in which Alexander was a plaintiff.4,5

Research Comment:

The above mentioned court documents establish that Alexander left at least one heir at his death, a daughter named Margaret. There is no marriage record in Washington Co., Virginia for Alexander, and the 1823 sale of his future interest in his mother's land suggests he may have been preparing to leave the area. In Oct. 1845, when deeds were executed by the county commissioner to divide Thomas Montgomery's lands, 53 acres were deeded to Margaret Beaty "and the other unknown children and heirs of Alexander Beaty".6
