Birth16 Jun 1817 William Lee Maiden was born on 16 Jun 1817 in Augusta County, Virginia.1
Marriage23 Nov 1837 He married Rebecca Jane Butt, daughter of Richard Butt and Margaret Black, on 23 Nov 1837 in Botetourt County, Virginia.3
William's sister Eliza was married to Rebecca's brother Richard Wesley Butt.
Migration Following their marriage William and Rebecca lived in Botetourt County where their first 2 or 3 children were born. However by the birth of Eliza in 1843 they had moved south to Washington County.
Land-Buy18 Feb 1847  When William's father bought land from Jeremiah Gardner in February, 1847, William bought an adjacent 200 acres. The land sat on what was then called Mobley's or Findlay's Creek, but which over the years came to be known as Maiden Creek.4
Guardian23 Apr 1849  William was named guardian of his sister Eliza's children on 23 Apr 1849 in Washington County. [Eliza's husband died in February 1847]5,6
Cens-185011 Jul 1850  The first federal census to record all members of a household by name was enumerated in 1850. William, age 33, owned land valued at $500. Besides Rebecca the household included Nimrod Hughes 19, and 6 Maiden children: George H. (11), Margaret S. (9), Eliza V. (7), William H. (5), Eliza J. (3) and Aaron H. (1).7
Cens-186027 Jun 1860  When the Washington County census was again recorded ten years later William's land holdings had increased in value to $2,000. He was listed as the owner of personal property worth $1,000. The household had also grown and included 10 children who ranged in age from 21 year old George to 1 year old twins Sarah and Mary.8
Neighboring households included William's father and several of his brothers.
One additional child was born in 1863. Named King Heiskel, he died in the fall of 1864. The previous spring William, at the age of 47 had enlisted in Company E of the 6th Battalion of the Virginia Reserves. In August he was given a discharge for family reasons, perhaps due to the illness of this youngest child.9
The fall of 1865 was also a time of loss as 2 children, 12 year old Francis and 6 year old Sarah, both died of flux (severe diarrhea) during an 8 day period. William's brother John also lost a young daughter to flux during this same 8 day stretch. This does not begin to take into account the lingering effect of the Civil War (the Confederate Army surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse the previous spring). Many members of William's extended family fought during the war; several of William's brothers and his eldest son all joined the 48th Virginia Infantry.
Residence  William and Rebecca spent their married lives in their home in the Saltville District of Washington County. Besides raising their own children they provided a home for their widowed daughter Margaret [Susanna] Munsey and her 3 children.10,11
Death21 Jun 1897 William died on 21 Jun 1897 at age 80.1
Burial He was buried at Maiden Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1
