John Beattie & Ellen Gilmore born and married in Ireland.  Settled in Maryland remained there a few years and removed to Rockbridge Co Va. All their children were born in Maryland or Rockbridge Co. Va.
     John Beattie moved then to Washington Co. Va. where he spent the rest of his life.  He raised seven children - four daughters and three sons.

1. Mary, who married David Sayers of Wythe Co Va. she lived to the advanced age of one hundred years and raised a large family.

2. Agnes: married James Dysart who was captain of a company at the Battle of Kings Mt where he was badly wounded - but recovered and raised a large family.

3. Sarah - married a man by name of Logan - Kentucky - they raised a large family.

4. David - married Mary Beattie - a distant relation They had four sons and one daughter - He was a Captain of a company and much engaged in frontier service - led his men at Kings Mt with great success.

5. Jane married Mathew Ryburn of Washington Co Va and raised a large family -

6. John - killed at battle of Kings Mt.  unmarried - Ensign in his brothers Co

7. William, the youngest was also in the

battle of Kings Mt in his brother Davids Co.  Wm married when he was nineteen years of age - his wife was sixteen.

When John Beattie first settled here the Indians, being troublesome, they remained in the fort some time - The fort stood where our Glade Spring church now stands

William: born 1760 died April 4, 1860 being about the last of the men who fought at Kings Mt. His wifes maiden name was Mary Allison.
