                                                                                     June 21, 1939.

Mr. Redmond S. Cole,
Tulsa, Okla.

Dear Mr. Cole,

Your letter of June 11th is at hand requesting information concerning the Beattie family. I have examined all of my records and will be happy to exchange any data I have with you.

Three brothers came from Ireland when young and settled east of the Blue Ridge.  Two of these are found in the regiments during the Indian Wars.  They secured land in Frederick Co., Va. near where Fort Royal now stands. (Frederick Co. was established in 1743 from parts of Orange and Augusta Counties) (ref. Cartmell’s History, ps. 491-492)

Early in the settlement of the western country John Beatty acquired a tract in present Washington Co., Va., on the Middle Fork of Holston (now Abingdon) of which he sold to Francis Beatty 200 acres (John and Francis were brothers).  Francis devised the land to John Stewart, who married a daughter of Francis. (ref. Chalkley’s Augusta, Vol. 2, p.90)

John Beattie (Beatty) died in 1790, in Washington Co., Va. (his will filed there. His wife was Ellen GILMORE.  They were both born in Ireland. (ref. Bruce, Vol. VI, p. 177)
John Beattie and Ellen (Elinor) had the following children:

(1) David, (b. 1752-d. 1814) Capt. in Battle of King’s Mountain. He married Mary Beattie, his cousin (Dau. of Francis) and settled in Washington Co., Va.  They had 4 sons & 1 dau. (Ref. King’s Mountain Men, p. 147)

(2) William Beattie (b. 1760; d. 1860) Lived all his life at Glade Spring, Va. (in Washington Co.) It is not recorded that he took part in the Revolutionary War (King’s Mt. Me [Men], p. 147 lists William as a soldier in the Battle of King’s Mountain. He married Mary ALLISON, who was born in Washington Co. and died there at the home in Glade Spring. Of their children I have the name of only one:
     (1) William Beatty jr. who married Dorothy Grosh.  Of their children I have record of    only one:
              (1) Adam Beatty, who married Sarah Green and had, among others
                       (1) Judge Henry Oscar Beatty, b. in Ky. In 1812 (Ref. Cyclopedia American Biog., Vol. 12)
(Ref. Bruce, Vol. VI, p. 177)

(3) John Beattie, Killed at Battle of King’s Mountain in 1780.  He was an Ensign. He was unmarried, (Ref, Chalkley’s Augusta, Vol 2, p. 90)

(4) Agnes Beattie m. James DYSART in 1775 (Ref. Morton’s Hist. of Rockbridge Co., Va., p. 473)

(5) Daughter who married Mathew Ryburn) Ref. given me by L.P. Summers, of Abingdon, Va.

(6) Daughter who married David Sawyer ))

(7) Daughter who married James LOGAN

(8) Daughter who married --- Gilmore and had
      (1) Elinor Gilmore
      (2) Martha Gilmore

This is all the information I have concerning John Beattie, brother of Francis, but several of the lines you mentioned are in this branch.

[next page]

Francis Beattie, brother of John, married his cousin Jane Beattie.  She came from Ireland when a child on account of religious persecution. (Ref. Family Bible belonging to Mrs. Sue S. Haydon, great-granddaughter of Francis and Jane Beattie (Beatty)

Francis Beaty patented 200 acres of land in Lancaster Co., Penna., Feb. 4, 1737; he settled in Augusta Co., Va. prior to 1750 and was an early surveyor of that section (Ref. Wm & Mary Quarterly, 2nd Series, Vol. 5, p. 264)  Francis was a soldier at King’s Mountain.  In 1768 Francis Beattie had moved to Mecklinburgh Co., N.C. (Ref. Chalkley’s Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement in VA., p. 479 & p. 501) “Francis Beaty of Mecklenburg Co, North Carolina, Gent., to his brother-in-law John Tate, power of attorney to sell all lands belonging to Francis, including land bought of John Kerr, on Flat Spring Branch, joining the other land where I last lived”.  While in North Carolina he received land grants of thousands of acres in Mecklinburgh and Rowan Counties.  He returned to Washington County before 1788 and lived there until his death in 1789.  His children were

(1) Rosannah who married John Stewart (I am told they moved to Ky., but I have no proof)

(2) Sarah Beattie m. Joseph Little in 1788 (Ref. Hist. of Rockbridge Co., Va., p. 473) They probably lived in that county.

(3) Francis Beattie (Family Bible says he was killed at Bunker Hill) No record of his marriage

(4) Mary Beattie married Capt. David Beattie, her cousin (see John’s children)

(5) David Beattie - No further record
He may have moved to Ky. For I have a record from the Pisgah Church Cemetary, Pulaski Co., “David Beattie b. 1820, d. 1852” This may have been the son of the above David.

(6) Jane Beattie m. either a Bruster or Bustard.  No further record.

(7) Margaret Beattie  m. 1788 to Rev. Thos. Hansford. They moved to Ky. in the early days.  He was one of the earliest ministers in Ky., was a close friend of Daniel Boone.  They had
     (1) Jane (b. 1792; d. 1835) m. Daniel Clare.  Moved to Lincoln Co., Mo.
     (2) Wm. m. Patsy Owsley.  Lived & died at the old Hansford place in Crab Orchard, Ky.
     (3) Thos.
     (4) John m. Harriet Faris in 1827
     (5) Mary Hansford m. ROBERT GILMORE.  They had 2 sons.  Family records state they died en route to Calif. in 1849.
     (6) Margaret m. Stephenson. Lived in Ky.
     (7) Fountain m. Lenora Lee.  Moved to Springfield, Ill.
     (8) Elizabeth m. __ [66 typed on line?] Crockett, Pulaski Co., Ky
     (9) Nancy m. Richard Williams.  Lived in Ky.
     (10) Rosanna m. ____ [6 typed on line?] Martin, Lived in Ky
This is my line.  I have much more on all of these, but the Gilmore marriage seems to be the one name in this line you are interested in.

(8) John Beattie - No further record. I believe this may be your John’s father [added in script]
There is a record of a John Beattie who married Elizabeth Morris in 1798, which I think in all probability is this John (Ref. Hist. of Rockbridge Co., Va. p. 473)

This concludes my proved records of the lines of both Francis and John.  There are some other Beattie references which I believe belong to this line, but I have had no occassion [sic] to try to prove them. I shall give them to you and if you can place them I shall appreciate your advising me where they “fit in”.

    **************

There is a Miss Lena Beattie who lives at the old Beattie home place in Glade Spring, Virginia whom I am told has the whole history of the early Beattie family of Washington Co. I have written her several times, but she does not reply.  Maybe you would have better luck, and no doubt she could place your John Breckenridge Beattie, since he left the old home comparatively recently.  Its worth trying anyhow.  Don’t try Mr. Summers, I paid him $25.00, for which he promised me the entire line, and I received nothing of any proof.

Also there is a Mrs. E.E. Evans, Frederick Apts., Columbia, Mo. who is compiling a history of the early settlers in Mo. and she has the Beattie family listed. No doubt this is your line.  She is glad to exchange information, and I believe she could be of real assistance to you.

If I get any information which I think will interest you I shall be glad to send it on to you, and I shall be interested to hear from you.  If you have any information on the Francis Beattie family, where they came from in Ireland, when and where they landed, names of his parents, etc. I shall certainly appreciate your sending me your information.

      Cordially and sincerely yours,
      Elizabeth Clare Taubman
