JAMES BEATTIE OF BOONE COUNTY, MISSOURI.

The fact that Col. Switzler in his Histor[y] of Boone County mentioned the brothers Samuel and Dabid [sic] Beattie, and made no mention in connection therewith of this JAMES BEATTIE, leads me to believe he was not one of the Beattie brothers who migrated from Washington County Virginia to the State of Mo.  I believe he was a first cousin of Samuel and Dvid [sic].  If so he must have certainly been a son of DAVID BEATTIE of Washington County, Va.  This David Beattie was the son of the elder John Beattie, wife Ellen Gilmore.  David Beattie married a first Cousin, Mary Beattie, daughter of _____Beattie.  David was an officer at Kings Mountain.  His brother John was killed in that Battle.

David was buried in the Old EBBING SPRINGS CEMETERY in Washington County, Va.  The grayars [sic] has since been turned into a hog lot.  His grave was suitable marked when I first visited the cemetery.  His will dated 7-30-1805 was proven May 17, 1814.  (Grave stone showed his death 4-25-1814, aged 70) (Washington County, Va. wills, 4 page 56.  His brother William Beattie, also soldier at Kings Mountain, was Executor.  His widow survived him, and she too left a will, dated Oct, 17 1818, proven Jan. 18, 1821.  4 Wills p. 413.  James Beattie was named Executor of this will.  The children of David and Mary Beattie, according to their several wills were: JAMES, WILLIAM, POLLY, David, Armstrong, and John.  I know not when JAMES BEATTIE went to BOONE County, Mussouri [sic], but it was probably shortly before his death.  Samuel Beattie was first executor under this will.  (SEE BOX 12, Boone County Probate Records).  Will was dated Sept. 22, 1821.  But Samuel Beattie died in 1831, and Matthew R Beattie was named as executor. (This probably a son of James)  James mentioned as his child[r]en: Betsy, Malinda, RYBURN, Armstrong, Thomas E. Margaret and Henrietta.  The probate records of Boone County identify this James as Executor of one MARY BEATTIE (known by us to have been his mother). A deed found at B p.13, identifies RYBURN BEATTIE, as Matthew Ryburn Beattie.  There is also a deee [sic] in Boone County (I seem to have no citation) showing deed by Samuel Beattie and wife MARY G to MR and Armstrong Beattie.  This deed I find is at B p.13 date 12-12-1825 (or was this 1828).  This Matthew Ryburn Beattie, married in Boone County, Mo. 8-6-1835 AMANDA COWAN.  I was not able to trace the James Beattie Family of BOONE COUNTY, further.

NOTE: From these and other notes on the Beatties etc, it appears certain that the Beatties, Logans, Allison and Gilmores must have lived originally in the same section of Old Virginia, prior to the settlement of Washington County.  In Russel County (once a part of Washington County) the Cowans, Gilmores lived neighbors and intermarried.  The Cowans lived in Pulaskia County, Ky, and the Beatties Dysarts and Cowans migrated from Pulaski to Andrew County, Missouri.
