Mrs. Susan M. Kelly,
Route 2
Rosendale, Mo.

Dear Mrs. Kelly:
Thanks so much for your letter or rather the questionnaire.  It explained several things for me, and incidentally, proved some of my deductions relative to another James Beattie who lived in Columbia, Mo.  If my records are correct your great great grandfather was John BEATTIE.   He is supposed to have been an Irish emigrant, who came to the colonies, and finally located at Glade Springs, (now Washington Co. Va.)  He m. Eleanor _____[not filled in].  His will is of record at Abingdon, Va.  Among his children were William Beattie, your great grandfather, and David Beatie.

William Beattie, your great grandfather was near 100 when he died in 1860.  His wife was a Miss Allen or Allison.  A Virginia record indicated that his son JAMES BEATTIE, your grandfather married a Miss Elizabeth Stephenson of Kentucky.  There my Virginia record ended until you told me who your father was.

David Beattie, brother of your great grandfather married a cousin, Mary Beattie, and had David Beattie who married Nancy Clark.  This couple came to Andrew Co., Mo., and died near Bedford chalep [Chapel].  They were the parents of John B. Beattie (my great uncle) and Armstrong and James Beattie.  This James married a Miss Scott and left a family, that lived over by Rea. Claybourne Beattie of Rea is of this family.  You probably know of the Armstrong (“Strong”) Beattie family.  So as I piece out the story your father David S. Beattie and Uncle John B. Beattie (“Uncle Brack”) were third cousins.

This accounts for all the Beatties in Andrew County except the Joshua N. Beattie, I asked you about in my letter.  This man lived in Andrew County about 1850, or thereabouts.  Recent data that came to me convinces me that this Joshua was a brother of your grandfather.  When I get a reply from a lady in Utah, I will know more about the matter.

I need some more identifying data, so would be greatly obliged to you if you would fill out the enclosed sheet and drop it in the mail for me.  What I am anxious particularly to get is data about WHERE your fathers brothers and sisters lived, and particularly whether any of them lived in Andrew County.

Again thanking you for your kindness, I am,
                                                         Yours sincerely,
                                                         Redmond Selecman Cole
