  William and Mary spent the first 10 or 12 years of their marriage in Washington County. At the turn of the century they were enumerated in the Kinderhook District with two daughters: 6 year old Bessie and 4 year old Edith. Mary's 19 year old sister was also part of the household.8 
Cens-191022 Apr 1910  By about 1905 they had settled in Bristol - on the Tennessee side - where their 4th child, Mary Eleanor, was born. The 1910 census stated that William was employed as a dry goods merchant.9 
Cens-192013 Jan 1920  Ten years later they were again enumerated in Bristol; the address was recorded as 1131 Windsor Avenue. William worked as a salesman at a department store while daughters Bessie and Mary Eleanor both worked as bookkeepers.10
