Birth31 Aug 1842 Mathew Ryburn Edmondson was born on 31 Aug 1842 in Washington County, Virginia.1,3 
Military  During the Civil War Mathew served as a member of Company H of the 37th Virginia Infantry under Col. Samuel Fulkerson and Capt. R.E. Grant. He enlisted as a private at Abingdon, Virginia on 24 Aug. 1861, and eventually served as corporal and then sergeant. On May 12, 1864 he was taken prisoner at Spotsyvlania and was not released until May 11, 1865 (from Ft. Delaware).3,4 
  Mathew's brother Samuel also served with the 37th and was also taken prisoner at Spotsylvania. Mathew's older brother William served as Lieutenant of Company H and served with the company throughout the war. He suffered several wounds and was captured by Union forces at the Battle of Fisher's Hill in September 1864. By Feb. 1865 he too was held at Ft. Delaware.5,6 
Cens-18701870  Following the war Mathew returned home and helped his widowed mother run the family farm and care for the younger members of the family.7 
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  This pattern continued into the 1880s with Mathew running the farm, and his younger unmarried sisters Rosanna, Hettie and Isabel living with their mother and older brother.8 
Cens-19001900  Mathew's mother Margaret died in 1895 and by the turn of the century the household make-up had changed. At age 56, Mathew, who did not marry, was enumerated as the head of the family. His younger brother Samuel, whose wife had died, had returned to live with Mathew. Also present was their sister Hettie (46, single) and widowed sister Mary Hall (with her 15 year old son Charles) and 13 year old daughter Margaret.9 
  Sister Rosanna had married in 1881 and moved to Texas where she died in 1897. Sister Isabel had married in 1885. 
Milit-Pens28 Jun 1917 In June 1917 Mathew was granted a pension of $50 by the state of Virginia as a disabled Confederate soldier. He was 72 and suffered from kidney trouble. Mathew stated that he owned real estate valued at $92 and no personal property.3 
Death26 Jan 1919 Mathew died on 26 Jan 1919 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 76.1 
Burial He was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1
