Birthbetween 1843 and 1844 Edward Milburn Ryan was born between 1843 and 1844 in Virginia.4
Edward was most likely born in Montgomery County. His mother died in 1856 following which his father remarried and moved the family to Mercer County, Virginia.
Military  At the beginning of the Civil War Edward's father joined the Confederate Army. He served as captain of Company I of the 60th Virginia Infantry. Edward and his brother Joseph appear to have enlisted in Company I under their father in March 1862 at Princeton, (Mercer County, Virginia, now W. VA). However the Compiled Confederate Service Records for both men also include references to their having enlisted in August 1861 at White Sulphur (probably White Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier Co., VA, now W. VA) or in April 1862 at Camp Rappahanock, Virginia. The 1862 dates are most likely correct as Edward first appeared on company Muster Rolls in the spring of 1862. He appears on all subsequent muster rolls for Company I through the spring of 1864.5
Death9 May 1864 Edward died on 9 May 1864 during fighting at Cloyd's Farm (the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain) near Dublin in Pulaski County, Virginia. He was no more than 22 years old.6,5
Edward's brothers Joseph and Boman may have also been present. Edward's father had resigned his position with the 60th Infantry in 1862 due to ill health, but had rejoined the fighting as Captain of a company of Home Guard (from the Montgomery Co. area). They fought next to the men of the 60th Infantry at Cloyd's Farm.
