Research Comment:

It appears that John Beaty and Rebecca McQuown had 2 children together during the 3 years of their marriage, however neither child survived. The names and dates of birth/death of both children is unclear. A collection of headstone readings for Rock Spring Cemetery reports a stone inscribed "infant son of John & Rebecca Beaty, d. 16 Apr 1829, age 5 days. John and Rebecca were married in March 1829. Another headstone in the same cemetery reads: Ann O.C. Beaty d. 6 March 1833, age 2y, 11m. This information suggests Ann was born in Feb. 1830. The same cemetery reading reports that this stone says Ann was the d/o John and Rebecca Beaty. The stone was recently located but the portion naming Ann's parents is too worn to read. The word "daughter" and the letter "R" or "B" on the following line is barely visible.

Though it is possible John and Rebecca had a child the month after their marriage and then a second child 10 months later, it seems rather unlikely. The issue is further clouded by a Chancery suit filed in the 1840s over the division of land formerly belonging to John's grandfather, Thomas Montgomery. Papers filed in the case state that at John's death his only heir was a daughter Margaret who died shortly after he did. According to a 1960s era reading of John's stone, he died in Aug. 1832; the infant Ann died in March 1833. Did the court case somehow confuse Ann's name and refer to her as Margaret? Or is it possible John's stone (the year of death is now illegible) died later than 1832, leaving a daughter Margaret? No probate or other record has been found to confirm the 1832 date of death.11,12,13
