Cens-185010 Aug 1850 Mary was 32 years old and lived with her widowed mother when the 1850 census of Washington County was recorded.6 
Cens-186029 Jun 1860  Following her mother's death Mary made her home with her brother John Henderson Smyth and his family.7 
  John died during the Civil War and his wife Elizabeth died just a few years later, leaving 4 orphaned children. 
Cens-18801880  Mary then assumed the role of head of the household and appears to have been responsible for raising the children.8 
Will18 May 1896 Mary wrote her will on 18 May 1896. She noted that she was in her 81st year and of sound mind. Mary left her estate to the 4 children of John Henderson Smyth. She also noted that she had sold her interest in John's estate years ago but had not conveyed title. She therefore relinquished in quit claim all her rights to that estate. Charles Akers and Robert Cuddy were named as executors. They were married to Nannie and Lydia Smyth, daughters of John Henderson Smyth.9
